Phonemic Awareness ToolBox by Karina Trejo

15 Items! I choose Phonemic awareness because this is highly connected to not only oral language skills but also the goal of reading comprehension. In addition, I work a lot with English language learners who have developed a different understanding of particular sounds and therefore do need additional support in letter and word sounds.

You are to color the pictures that have words that Rhymes. This task requires the students to say the words out aloud first and then based on the sounds to color in words that sound the same. When finished, they are to cut of the words and glue them onto the tree based on the sounds of the words. This allows for students to further integrate their new knowledge by having students move the words around to their matching word partner. This activity would be most appropriate for kindergarteners or first graders as it has words that are at that at that grade level.

Students are to listen and sing along to the following song. There are visual supports for students to make educated guesses in what the rhymes may be. Similarly to the previous song, this activity requires to sing along with the song in order to get familiar with the rhyme words. However, it is a level up in a sense that the students are required to recall the word that is the appropriate rhyme word.
This song as a lot of context clues and support for the children to help them remember the rhyme words. For ELL's, it relies on students to pay attention to the visuals in order to help them remember. They may need to have several words on the board that could be the answer the the song's questions. In addition, the song is sung relatively faster in comparison to the previous video. Therefore, this assignment may be most appropriate to an older age group such as 2 or 3 graders.

However, it the words were larger, it would then be appropriate for older age groups as well. It may not be as appropriate for ELL if they share similar alphabetical sounds to their native language. This activity could be for student's ranging from 1-3 grade. It would only require additional support for the younger age groups or ELL's. It pay be in question for students that are very young since it requires students to have already a familiarity with the sounds and the spelling of the words. In addition, it may also be a challenge for ELL's but if the teacher models and verbally says the words first with visual support, it should be appropriate.
