Stephen Kings "The Shining" mirrors

The article is very short and brief. It talks about how the mirrors in his book are like reflections of ones true self. The book's main character, Jack, is sought out to be evil when he looks in the mirror. Which in a brief way relates to the scarlet letter because of how Hester looks at herself. The article was very short and brief because the main part of it we needed was in the summary portion.

Why it is a part of the book

The mirror symbolism in the Scarlet Letter because it shows the outside of Hester and the curiosity of Pearl. In the book the reflection takes place when Hester is looking at a knights armor and the scarlet letter is the only thing she sees in the reflection. That's all pearl can see too. Hester then realizes that to the outside world she is just the A she is not Hester. Pearl sees it as something a part of her mother not something that defines her. The symbol is really important to the book because it sets up for a later reveal of truth to Hester. As well as the way that other characters looks at themselves in mirrors changes every time. Such as when Dimmesdale looks in the mirror he sees that he is a man of sin. Chillingworth when he looks in the mirror is reflection is something else. He doesn't see himself the way he use to be due to him becoming evil. In other words as you can see this symbol is an important part of the book because it represents change in the charters. Ever time one of the characters looks in the mirror their reflection is different from they viewed it before.

"He kept vigils, likewise, night after night, sometimes in utter darkness; sometimes with a glimmering lamp; and sometimes, viewing his own face in a looking glass, by the most powerful light which he could throw upon it. He thus typified the constant introspection wherewith he tortured, but could not purify, himself. (Hawthorne, Ch 11, pg 141)
In this quote it discusses how Dimmesdale sees himself as a sinful man who isn't willing to confess his sin so he therefore tortures himself as a punishment for what he has done.

Hester looked, by way of humoring the child; and she saw that, owing to the peculiar effect of this convex mirror, the scarlet letter was represented in exaggerated and gigantic proportions, so as to be greatly the most prominent feature of her appearance. In truth, she seemed absolutely hidden behind it. Pearl pointed upward, also, at a similar picture in the head-piece; smiling at her mother, with the elfish intelligence that was so familiar an expression on her small physiognomy. That look of naughty merriment was likewise reflected in the mirror, with so much breadth and intensity of effect, that it made Hester Prynne feel as if it could not be the image of her own child, but of an imp who was seeking to mould itself into Pearl’s shape. (Hawthorne, ch 7, pg102)
In this quote it discusses how looking at her reflection from the armor she sees the big scarlet letter which seems as if she's hiding behind it. Her reflection is seen different from before because in her reflection at the moment nothing stands at the most other than the A.

At one point, Hester sees herself looking into a mirror as a young girl. This mirror is giving her moments of recollection of her past and filling her with nostalgia. Regret comes upon her conscience, as well. She begins to wish for those better, easier times once again. She secretly wishes for everything to go back to how it once was: innocent. The time where she was young and full of beauty and not held accountable nor ridiculed for committing adultery seems favorable to her. These mirror images make her reflect on the “A” and how it was before such a thing became a huge part of her life as it is now.

Chillingworth comes across a piece of glass and notices his reflection within it. He doesn't exactly recognize the person he first sees. He feels himself growing more evil and sinful as time goes on. That is also what his reflection reveals to him. Although he does realize how much he is changed and how "evil" he has become, he does not attempt to change it. The reflection of himself in the mirror does aid in making him have some kind of realization, though. These type of reflections make each of the characters really focus on their inner self and who they are becoming and even who they have been.
