Greek architecture now and then

Greek architecture is used in many places across the world. Greek civilization provided the basis of what came afterward in literature, philosophy, math, science, and so many other areas. Architecture is no exception. Greeks perfected and refined their use of columns and other techniques. They used them often in temples and buildings as shown in many different ruins such as the Parthenon. Architecture from then is studied and adapted to fit specific modern builds. Beyond just the physical similarities the greeks were the first ones to invent the most basic things such as arches and columns. There are many examples of modern structures that have greek architecture and all buildings have some architectural origin from Greece. The Abraham Lincoln Memorial, Monticello, and The Philadelphia Museum of Art are all great examples of ancient greek architecture used today.

The Abraham Lincoln Memorial

The Lincoln memorial was made in 1922 and was dedicated to Lincoln 57 years after his death. With the Potomac river in the background, the Memorial truly looks like it comes from the ancient greek time period. Columns surround the cella that has the statue of Abraham Lincoln inside. The columns are Doric columns and are in front of and to the sides of the memorial itself. The columns do support the roof, although their main purpose is for the entrance to look open and grand at the same time. Above the massive pillars is a frieze that is made out of white stone bricks. The cornice overhangs the frieze and helps to give the structure depth. The stylobate also helps with depth. It Shows that the memorial is higher than the ground and more important. The Lincoln Memorial has many features that resemble ancient greek architecture. Clearly, greek architecture played a big role in the creation of this building.

Monticello

Monticello was designed by Thomas Jefferson and it served as a house for him and his family. Around the front entrance are doric columns that support the entablature. The frieze has a tabby pattern of longer and shorter stone that gives depth. The cella on the inside is made of brick and has windows. The cornice highlights the pediment that is over the frieze. The pediment has a window, but it's not a real window; there is nothing behind it so it's just there to be pretty. The dome behind the entrance is there to be decorative as well. It gives the building hight and texture. Surrounding the entrance is brick and more windows, which are not specifically greek style. The bricks are more modern and reflect architecture from the time the structure was built. The merging of the two styles is done well and highlights Jefferson's architect skills. Together, the greek architecture and the modern architecture blend well and make a beautiful greek masterpiece.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art

The Philadelphia Museum of art has multiple key greek styles on the outside. It has corinthian columns, a cornice, a pediment, an architrave, and a cella. Around the front entrance are corinthian columns that support the entablature and make the entrance feel open. The cornice highlights the pediment that is over the architrave. The cella is made of large bricks and has windows that gleam. This building has greek architecture written all over it. It has a lot of greek aspects, but it also uses some modern aspects. The surrounding court yard has a modern style. The buildings connected to the main entrance have lots of windows which are modern. The whole surrounding complex is new and was most likely added for the museum. The modern style and the ancient greek style work well together and make a unique building.
