According to document C/D, people were lying and acting because they were jealous and wanted more power. They told many that these innocent women were witches and made them go to trial. People believed them because they were ignorant and confused by what was happening. Eventually, the girls would get hanged.

Why were the accusers accusing?

In Document E, there was a map that showed the western and eastern side of the Salem Village. It showed the status of people on each side, whether they were accusers, defenders, or accused witch. On the eastern half of the village, most people were defenders or accused witches. On the western side, the population mostly consisted of accusers and some witches or defenders. They were also poor and lost their political power. From this, it seems like the poor were jealous of the rich and decided to accuse them.

One was pressed to death. Other than the twenty that were put to death, four people (one man and three women) died in jail. But why were more women accused than men.

Does the age of the people determine who the accusers/accused are?

Yes, the age does have some correlation to whether you are a witch or an accuser. In Doc B, most of the accused people were married women that were ages 41-60. Also, most of the witches were women, not men. Most of the accusers were single females ages 16-20. Many people believe that the single girls were jealous of the married women, and wanted the power that they attained from their husbands. They accused the others to hopefully get them hanged so they can have the authority.

When did the trouble begin?

The trouble started when two young girls, Betty Paris (age nine), and her cousin, Abigail Williams (age eleven), asked a woman named Tituba to help them know their fortunes. Tituba did what she was asked and over the next several months the two girls began to show odd behavior. Betty's father, the Reverend Samuel Parris, noticed their behavior and was confused by the girls' actions. They kept creeping under chairs and stools and getting into holes. Later on the girls accused two local white women and the slave Tituba as the witches who caused them to do this. The three women went to jail but Tituba saved her own life by confessing to practicing witchcraft.

In the background essay, One main reason why the killings stopped was because the governor's own wife was accused of witchcraft. More than one hundred alleged witches that were still imprisoned were released.

More women were accused to witchcraft because they had to worry about different things, like how much power they had. Men all had much more control than women, so there was no point in accusing each other, even though some were accused. Girls became jealous of married women who had more authority, and started lying about them so they wouldn't have more power than they did.

In Document C, it shows an interview between the afflicted girls, Bridget Bishop, and the Examiner. The afflicted girls had accused Bridget Bishop of effecting them with her witchcraft. Bridget tried to defend herself saying, "I never saw these persons before..." and "I know nothing of it. I am innocent to a witch. I know not what a witch is." Of course, the examiner did believed the girls instead of Bridget and Bridget was hanged on June 10th. This just shows that the girls were very persuasive and caused a large amount of people to die.
