A Spokane Speaks Out: A Previous Wellpinit Player Pins Success on Hard Work

Last week, the joyous news of Reardan winning over Wellpinit comes with equally disheartening news regarding the racial tension that was on and off the court. Arnold Spirit, a shooting guard who previously played for Wellpinit, walked twenty miles nearly every day to attend Reardan and play for their basketball team. However, some members of the Reardan community did not appreciate the welcome that the school has officially provided and the welcome his teammates have given him.

In a forum on the school's website, several white supremacist comments were made regarding his position on the team and in the school, as well as his character, race, and value within the community.

In an after-game press conference, Arnold expressed his own lack of community in both his home reservation and his adopted school, Reardan. He has expressed that he doesn't feel like he belongs in either community. We as a community have an obligation for social justice, to present a better welcome than this to our friends who come from different walks of life.

Press Conference after Shut-Down Puts on the Pressure; Shuts Down “Confidence” of Newbie

Arnold Spirit, the new Native American basketball player at Reardon High, showed his discomfort during tonight’s press conference after completely destroying Wellpinit in the last basketball game of the regular season. He stumbled over his words, missed
questions that interviewers asked, and fumbled with his hands, showing how estranged he feels. Interviewers laid on the pressure thick to impress the masses by
asking hard-hitting questions about his culture and pointed out that being the only Native American on the basketball team – he clearly doesn’t fit in here. He said he wants to make his people proud, but tonight, I think he failed them. While he was respectable, not starting riots and appearing sober, Spirit definitely didn’t break down any stereotypes. In fact, he only made it more obvious that he has got to go. #SorryNotSorry

The players lined up around the center of the court, notably among the
Reardon players was freshman guard Arnold Spirit, a recent transfer from the
opposing school, and Spokane Indian.

This is Spirit’s first year at Reardon High and has proven
to be a challenging adjustment.
