If Columbus hadn't have found North America, we wouldn't be where we are right now and I'm thankful for that because if any of the other explorers found North America first, I'm sure that it would be a whole lot worse than it was. Christopher Columbus was able to prevent a very dangerous tribe, the Caribs, that practiced cannibalism from the Taino tribe from which they discovered inhabiting the land when they landed in the Americas. He prevented another historic event which would've be devastating. However, in Europe slavery was not illegal and very common and it was not until later that Queen Isabella of Spain declared the New World off-limits to slavers. To address the other side of this argument I do agree that the matter that Columbus punished these slaves for not doing as he asked was not justified and he was rightly sent away in chains for that.
