-Sometimes difficult to get all team members on board and understanding the systematic thinking of MEL and using the tools. Also there is often a language barrier. Important to practice and use the tools many times to increase understanding. Sometimes necessary to translate verbally to key stakeholders
-ToC and MEL tools are inseparable, they work together.

-Four AgriFoSe Projects were represented in the breakout group. Two projects, the project Agricultural Biologicals and the one Functional Extension, are up and running and are using the MEL tools extensively. The two new projects, one on using Black Soldier Flies a protein source for aquaculture in Vietnam and second on sustainable Intensification of banana cultivation in Uganda are just staring up and have not developed their ToC impact pathway yet (and have therefore not used any MEL tool)

-The participants using the MEL tools all thought they were useful and was helping them in trying to monitor and document the change process in their projects.

-An issue and challenge that came up in the discussion was the issue on how extensive MEL reporting should be and to what extent one should capture all project data and information in the Mel tools? Background here being that projects are generating a lot of information and it is sometimes hard to decide how much of that should go into the MEL Tools? A reflection here from the AgriFoSe Management team was the MEL tool should not be seen as a “straightjacket” but that MEL tool is a guide to the project teams on how to collect relevant information that describe the change process the project are promoting. So, there is a lot of information generated in the projects from the data collection, surveys, interviews, meetings etc which does not have to be captured in any AgriFoSe MEL tool. For example, project information that deals with the situation at hand, including current practices and polices and the issues challenges connected to these, does not have to be captured in the MEL tools.

-There was also a discussion on that the AgriFoSe C&E team are having 6 and 12 months review meetings on the ToC/MEL with all projects. In these meetings, issues on the ToC impact pathway and how to do the MEL process are discussed.

- Six month review difficult to do if the team has not been able to engage with stakeholders, but there are team changes in terms of knowledge and insights that could be captured in the template.
- Need to capture the changes in the knowledge and skills o the project teams, as this is a key part of AG2030
- A change story is difficult - is it just the change that has been influenced by the project, or maybe it is due to other factors. The Change Story recognises this, there is space to reflect on the other factors, and the contribution of the project.
- Change can be stimulated just by the interactions of the project with stakeholders, so small changes can be seen quite early on.
- The tools need to capture changes in behaviour of different stakeholders, as they emerge (building on outcome mapping)
- Change Story - which level should this be captured on? Community and broader level vs. individual level.
