Structure and routine will help students to feel confident as they operate in a predictable environment. When a teacher clearly expresses expectations, students will feel safe as they participate in discussion and post videos. They will feel that they are doing the right thing and meeting the teacher's expectations when procedures are clearly articulated.

When students know what the expectations are for a classroom, it can help them alleviate anxieties about "what's coming next" or "what am I suppose to do". Understanding the structure of how the next 45 minutes will go (attendance, questions from last night's homework, classroom practice, linking new material/concepts to yesterday's work, questions, practice, hand in homework) allows students to prepare appropriately for the day and to make predictions about when they can ask questions or may need to increase their level of attention. However, behavior is always a concern that needs to be addressed. In keeping with structure and consistency, students must all know what the response (consequence) will be when they do not display appropriate behaviors or do not follow the routines in place. A consistency in teacher response is also crucial for maintaining a student's ability to feel safe (reduced anxiety), make predictions, and participate effectively.

Building a solid routine isn't just helpful for myself as a teacher in terms of planning, but also it will provide the students with something consistent and reliable that they can fall back on. I know that for myself, having a plan and a regular routine is necessary to keep my feet on the ground and keep me moving forward. Having a solid routine and structure in place for the students, so they know what to expect of me and what I expect of them, will set my classroom up for success. The strength of any good building project lies in the foundation.

The main difference is the types of engaging lesson will need to change. I believe that holding the students in person or virtually to a high standard will build the type of classroom that I need.

I have always found that it takes at least 3-4 weeks for students to really understand what is expected of them in the classroom. It sometimes feels as if you are repeating yourself a million times and that it's unnecessary, but all that repetition and consistency pays off. Students need this in order for the classroom to operate smoothly. I will need to take the same amount of time, if not more, to set up the expectations for my virtual classroom. I believe that with clear explanations, routines, and structure, students will be able to function well in the virtual environment as well. Even though we as adults may feel that 1 or 2 times of doing a task is enough for understanding, realistically, our students will need much more than that in order to be independent and confident in their ability to function in the virtual classroom.

This quote is much like the first. Taking your time to build community and routines allows for much greater learning potential. As we continue to push curriculum content we need to remember that students learn best in an environment with a strong foundation. Community and routine are integral ingredients in that foundation. We often think of the foundation as the prior set of academic skills our students have, but that is really just one part. It's like the bag of cement you buy at Home Depot. Without water it is nothing but powder.

I think that this year, more than ever, we need to go slow before go fast. Students are in a brand new situation with new rules and regulations. They were also abruptly pulled out of school last year and need time to adjust to this new way of schooling. It is our job to go slow in the beginning of the year to make sure the students understand they are safe and cared for in our classroom. Setting up technology is going to take time. If we take our time in the beginning, our instruction will be more effective later on.

This quote is something I have always believed in. The beginning of the year is so important and exhausting. It is important to take the time to create a solid foundation. Building this solid foundation will be rewarding later. This was made evident last spring when we went virtual.
Regardless of the location of or type of classroom, teaching is about building relationships. We are in the business of human-interaction; therefore, the time spent building relationships pays off in creating an environment conducive to learning. Few students will be open to learning about content or skills if they don't feel 'seen', so to make the most of our time together, we must create a community of learners.

It is important to create a safe environment where students feel trusted, respected, and valued. IN order to maintain safety from a physical and a health perspective, we need to invest more time prior to the occurrence of negative behaviors to support students in learning new skills and expectations and take the extra time to reinforce when they are demonstrated rather than returning to a culture of responding to negative behaviors. This will need to be a priority so that students and staff can maintain safety and cleanliness in the classrooms and buildings.
