Benvolio tells the two to stop fighting, but they fight anyways. Romeo yells to Benvolio to intervene. "Draw, Benvolio; beat down their weapons. Gentlemen, for shame! Forbear this outrage! Tybalt, Mercutio, the Prince expressly hath forbid this bandying in Verona streets. Hold, Tybalt! Good Mercutio!" As the two try and stop the fight, Mercutio is struck, and Tybalt flees. Romeo then kills Tybalt out of rage. Despite his efforts, Benvolio was not able tp keep the peace in this scene.

The prince asks why is Tybalt dead, and who killed him. Benvolio just gets up and say Romeo did it. "There lies the man, slain by young Romeo, That slew thy kinsman, brave Mercutio." He totally contradicted himself when he told Romeo to run and escape earlier. And he was telling the truth. "This is the truth, or let Benvolio die." He swears on his life he is truthful.

After Benvolio ratted out Romeo, Romeo was not sentenced to death, but banished from Verona. Due to this, Romeos mother died of grief over losing her son. Benvolio had a clear conscience, but paid the price of telling the truth and lost his cousin, and his aunt. Not only that, the rest of the Capulets were enraged and wanted vengeance. So Benvolio must have had an overwhelming sense of guilt.

Through out the whole play, Benvolio tried to be as peaceful as possible, and triedn to keep the peach as much as possible as well. His action may have resulted in death, but he tried. Towards the end of the play, Benvolio took a darker turn, and ratted out Romeo and got him banished from Verona. He was truthful through out the whole play, maybe too much.
