The front of the book has a person wearing a red cape that covers their entire body, they appear to be holding a scythe by their side. It looks as if there is a light shining down on the character. The back of the book looks as if there is light coming down and the parts where there is no light happens to be red. It looks like the front age except the character is not there.

The world no longer experiences natural death and in order to keep population control a society was created to keep things in check, these people in the society are called scythes. They are to glean/kill those who they believe is their time to go, not out of spite, revenge, hate or because they simply want to but because it is what has to be done. The scythes are to choose apprentices who will become their heir but must be careful with who they choose. Not all scythes follow the rules and join the society simply to be able to kill others with no consequence. Two teens are chosen to become apprentices for the same scythe, they must compete against each other for the spot but a tragedy strikes and their mentor has "self gleaned". They are separated and put with other scythes, they have loyalty and care towards each other but now must battle each other to become a scythe.

We are introduced to Citra, her family, and a scythe named Faraday. Citra and her family are met with a scythe named Faraday, he enters their home sending a shock of fear throughout this entire family, they were worried about his intentions but he was not there to glean/kill anyone but to eat dinner. He then revealed this to the family and that he was there to eat but would be gleaning their neighbor and asked to borrow a knife. After this he was complete with his gleaning and returned the knife to Citra, Citra denied the knife but eventually took it but got rid of it. Citra wanted nothing to do with the scythe or his gleaning and wanted to erase the memory of everything that had happened.

We are then introduced to Rowan, Tyger, and Kohl Whitlock. Tyger was a kid known for splatting(killing himself by jumping from high buildings) and Rowan was his friend who supported him regardless of the situation. Rowan was late to school and was headed to the attendance office where he was met with a scythe in the hall, scythe Faraday. Scythe Faraday was to glean someone from Rowan's school and when Rowan found out who it was, he was devastated, it was his schools star quarterback Kohl Whitlock. Kohl was going to be alone when gleaned but Rowan volunteered to be there with his regardless of hardly knowing him or the consequences of what might happen. After the gleaning Rowan was blamed for it, he did not fight back and took the blame, he knew that even if he tried to protect himself no one would believe him. He did not care though because he knew the truth and was there for Kohl when no one else could be.

Scythe Faraday anonymously invited Citra and Rowan to an opera, both Citra and Rowan were unaware of who each other were yet introduced themselves and then both tried to figure out who could have invited them to this event. Scythe Faraday appeared and partially began to explain to them why he had invited them, he made them meet him the next day and explained that he was looking for an apprentice and chose them both to do so. They were both in denial at first but eventually gave in but were not fond of this because they had no desire to become a scythe and despised the thought of gleaning someone. They took these roles and began to learn the ways of scythe Faraday.

I could not be as brave as both Citra and Rowan to be able to leave my whole life behind and become an apprentice to the embodiment of death. What I learned from them is that your life can change in just a second but never forget who you are.

Citra Terranova

Citra Terranova is a 16 year old girl with a brother named Ben, and mother and father known as the Terranovas. Her Genetic index was 22% Caucasoid, 37% Afric, 12% PanAsian, 14% Mesolatino, 15% Other. Citra has a warm-skin tone and long wavy hair. She was stubborn but a smart soul, Competitive and Driven, Loyal and Concerned with Justice, but also Quick-Tempered and Impulsive.

Rowan Damish

Rowan Damish is a 16 year old boy who has a large family but they are emotionally distant. His family contains his mother, stepdad, grandmother, multiple siblings,half siblings and cousins. He sees himself as the lettuce of his family because he feels unseen or appreciated. 33% Caucasian, 13% African, 12% Pan-Asian, 22% Meso-Latino, and 20% Other. He has dark hair and lightly freckled skin. He is a complex individual with a strong moral even though he trained in violence.

Scythe Faraday is 226 years old but looks around the age of 60. He has short gray hair with a salt and pepper goatee. He is seen as fair, logical, and compassionate.

There is not a main character, the story has multiple different perspectives from multiple different characters such as Citra, Rowan, and Faraday. Citra and Rowan happen to be seen as dynamic characters, throughout the story they develop into having not only a strong body but a strong mind. They learn to adapt and fight for what's right even if they must face consequences, they also look out for each other in any way they can even if it puts them in danger. Faraday can also be seen as a Dynamic character because at first he does not care for Rowan and Citra as his own but as companions but throughout the story his feelings develops and he grows to care for them, he even slightly changes his ways for them.

We are then introduced to a group of scythes. Scythe Goddard who is seen to be the leader and his comrades Scythe Rand, Scythe Chomsky, and Scythe Volta. They are known for doing mass gleanings and doing them brutally. They are feared by many and despised by many other scythes including Scythe Faraday, Citra, and Rowan.

Citra and Rowan go through a tragedy after finding out that whoever loses at the conclave will have to glean the other, they find out that Scythe Faraday is dead and it is claimed to be a self gleaning but neither Citra or Rowan believe this. Rowan is taken in by Scythe Goddard and Citra was taken in by Scythe Curie. They struggle with these new circumstances and try to adapt as best they could though they do miss Scythe Faraday. Rowan goes through struggles and being treated horribly by Scythe Goddard and inevitably blames him for Faraday's death, both Rowan and Citra believe this. Citra and Rowan grow and become different people while being with their new Scythes, they are no longer the people they once were. Though they both have become different people from who they both once knew they still care and protect each other even if they must be enemies.

What I enjoyed about the book so far is the developments of the characters and the twists in the story. Both Rowan and Citra became stronger people, mentally and physically. They went through struggles and used these struggles as lessons, they didn't let what hurt them bring them down or turn them bad, they took it in and became better people. Though they both became people they didn't recognize they both had strong morals and knew right from wrong. I was shocked and sad when I found out that scythe Faraday had died, I was also very curious the rest of the story to figure out how he truly died and who could really have done it, I had assumptions of what truly happened and did not believe he was really dead. When reading from different perspectives I am allowed to see how the character feels, it is not complicated to follow along and written beautifully. Citra and Rowan start off as strangers, develop into friends, they do have slight feelings for each other but inevitably ignore them. They also grow a sort of close family dynamic with Scythe Faraday though it came to an end I was something I enjoyed reading about. The feeling this book brought me was curiosity, I wonder if sometime in the long future our future could be like anything of the future in scythe. Will we also beat natural death, would we have revivals, is there a possibility of us having true scythes?

I was honestly shocked at the end, that Scythe Faraday wasn't truly dead and was actually unaware of everything going on with Citra and Rowan, Rowan had even killed Goddard and his companions. The novel was an emotional roller coaster, I felt emotions such as happiness, sadness, excitement, curiosity, and even fear. Knowing that Citra had to kill her younger brother Ben as her first glean was really hard because i do not believe i would ever be able to kill any family member even knowing they would be revived. I admired the love Rowan had for Citra, though he could be punished for loving her or doing things to protect her, he loved her regardless. When Citra earned the ring and became a true scythe i was glad but also shocked that Rowan didn't earn one as well. It amazed me that Citra was so sly to trick the scythedome into not allowing her to glean Rowan, i'm admired by the bravery and loyalty both Rowan and Citra have for one another. I did not know what I expected at the end but I was honestly shocked at the cliffhanger i was left off on. I was truly glad everyone eneded up alive besides the antagonists of the novel but I am not fully convinced that Scythe Goddard is dead. It was amazing to see the adaptation of both Citra and Rowan, the loyalty they held for each other and even when they had some doubts about one another they held on strong to the trust they both had. I was afraid Rowan was going on the wrong path but he proved me and everyone else wrong and that's something I'm glad to see.
