ARUP-

We were put into different groups and asked to use their
website “inspire”. Each group was given a term and we had to use the website to
find case studies on the term.

My group got the term: Disruptive technology.

We did not know what it meant so we had to do some research on it which took away some time to find case studies.

“A disruptive technology is one that displaces an established technology and shakes up the industry or a ground-breaking product that creates a completely new industry.”

At first I did not quite understand what it meant. The word itself is a bit confusing to me because I felt that it meant something “negative”
Instead of looking into it too deeply I decided to try to use a simple example that I could relate with and could break down to make it simple to comprehend.

The email: it transformed the way we communicate with people
this ended the letter-writing era, and therefore disrupted the postal industry.

The cellphone: made it possible for us to make phone calls anywhere
This meant less people using landline, and therefore disrupted the telecom industry.

Reference:

"What Is Disruptive Technology? - Definition from WhatIs.com." WhatIs.com.

I think “Uber” is the perfect example of disruptive technology. Not only does it change the way people use public transportation, but it is also disrupting the taxi service in London immensely. Uber provides the consumer fast and simple access to a type of private car hire, that is less costly, and more comfortable. You can split your fare with your friends, you can now connect your Spotify to the car and enjoy your ride listening to your own music. This type of technology is bound to disrupt the “analog” of the taxi industry.

Although, at times one has to question disruptive technology. Because although we live in a digital world we must take into account that some things, products, services etc. have been around for a long time so it is hard to displace them so abruptly. One must think of the ethics behind the disruption being caused. Who will it affect? Will it benefit the greater good? At times we are so caught up with "the new" that we do not realise we are disrupting the old in a negative manner.

I think that understanding disruptive technology is vastly important in order to generate a cohesive opinion about new technology and what is to come in the future.

After better understanding this was when we were able to do some research on their database

One of the articles we found was

Mobility in demand
Helsinki: which is a point-to-point mobility service, which includes bikes,
skates, taxi share, and driverless cars. It is an app passed journey planner

I think this is a great application that could definitely be used in a metropolitan city like London, in order to reduce pollution as well as the emission gases, since Europe is currently facing a pollution problem. This technology could disrupt public transportation in London such as buses and taxis, something that the company “Uber” has been doing over this past year.

"We Shape a Better World." Home.
