The first of these things was the lure of large amounts of relatively cheap land that could be cultivated. The government helped with this by enacting the Homestead Act of 1862, which gave settlers free land.Settlers also faced challenges such as droughts and heavy winters. Large farms and cattle ranches cover much of the Great Plains. In fact, it is some of the best farmland in the world. Wheat is an important crop, because wheat can grow well even without much rainfall. Large areas of the Great Plains, like this land in Texas, are also used for grazing cattle.But the plains were also extremely isolated; this makes living harder for widowed women because they have no men or neighbors present around them for protection.
