The GAP project in Turkey will monopolise the water of Tigris and Euphrates Rivers which will adversely affect agricultural production in the area and the livelihood of millions of people who depend on it.

By controlling the flow of these rivers, Turkey can limit the amount of water reaching Syria and Iraq, where millions of people rely on the rivers for agriculture, drinking water, and hygiene purposes.
For example, farmers in Iraq and Syria have reported declining water levels that negatively impact irrigation and livestock, directly harming their lives.
Therefore, the GAP project’s control over water resources not only disrupts agriculture but also endangers the social stability and economic well-being of millions who depend on the Tigris and Euphrates rivers downstream.

Due to water stress there has been severe physical impact on Pakistan.

This includes a receding ground water level, and loss of marine biodiversity.

Since there has been an excessive demand and an insufficient supply of water for people of pakistan, they have been taking too much water from the rivers, and increased consumption results, combined with reduced rainfall and already arid conditions, results in less suppy of the water and the river wate cannot replenish at the same rate as it is used up. Hence the lower groundwater level.

Also, since there is less groundwater, and the controlled number of creatures living in the water, they are left on the dry arid ground and hence die off. This might lead to endangerment of certain species, affecting the ecosystem as a whole.

Hence, these are the physical impacts.

The physical impact of the Tigris-Euphrates river dispute is the severe degradation of water quality and scarce amount of water supply. Upstream countries like Turkey built dams, drastically reducing the water supply reaching downstream countries like Iraq, leading to significantly lower river levels and concentrating pollutants in the remaining flow. This process directly causes the agricultural land to not be able to receive safe and clean water, as farmers are forced to use polluted water for irrigation, which poisons the soil, while also destroying habitats and biodiversity. Consequently, these physical changes threatens food security and livelihoods as water is unhygienic and there is scarce amount of water supply.

What are the social impacts of water stress caused by the Mekong river dispute?

P- The livelihood and food security pressures.

E- Several countries and millions of people depend on the Mekong River for fishing, agriculture and water supply.

E- When China reduced the water flow going downstream, many downstream countries are affected. It causes fishermen to lose their jobs as the number of species of fish decreases because of the change of water flow, families might lack food and water resources and many more negative changes. This harms both the marine ecosystem and the people from countries such as Vietnam.

L- Thus, two social impacts of water stress caused by the Mekong river dispute is the livelihood and food security pressures.

Social Impact:

Food insecurity. About 90% of the nation’s winter vegetables are grown using the Colorado river water, shortages could lead to national food insecurity. Agriculture is a water intensive activity, and people need the food to survive. Since there is insufficient supply that cannot meet up to the demand, there will be a nation wide food insecurity. Thus, this would lead to a significant social impact.

Young girls can even drop out of school just to carry out these tasks.

Social

A social impact of the Day Zero crisis was the increase in inequality between rich and poor communities.

While wealthier households in Cape Town could afford private rainwater tanks and bottled water, poorer residents in townships often had to queue for hours at communal taps, collecting their daily water allowance. Reports from 2018 showed that some informal settlements experienced overcrowding and tension at water collection points. This widened the gap between social classes. For poorer families, queuing for water reduced time for education, employment, and childcare, while wealthier citizens were relatively shielded from such struggles. This created resentment and social tension, as water access became a symbol of privilege.

Thus, the Day Zero crisis deepened existing social divisions in Cape Town, proving that environmental crises can amplify inequality and strain community cohesion.

Water stress in the Tigris-Euphrates basin has led to significant political impacts such as increased diplomatic tensions between countries like Turkey, Syria and Iraq.

Turkey’s large-scale dams and irrigation schemes such as their GAP project have significantly reduced the water flow to Syria and Iraq. For instance, the construction of the Ilisu Dam cut downstream water supply, with Iraq receiving up to 50% less water in dry years.

As Iraq and Syria are downstream and rely heavily on the rivers for drinking water, agriculture, and electricity, reduced flows undermine their water security. This fuels disputes over water allocation and sovereignty, with accusations that Turkey is hogging the water supply. The lack of a binding regional water-sharing agreement makes these tensions even harder to resolve.

Thus, the water stress in the Tigris-Euphrates basin has worsened political tensions in the Middle East—Turkey, Syria and Iraq.

Point: Water stress and the decline of Tonle Sap Lake have severely impacted Cambodia's economy by reducing fish stocks, which is a primary source of income for many families.

Evidence: As fish populations plummet due to changing water levels and pollution, approximately 3 million people who depend on fishing for their livelihood face significant income loss.

Explanation: Fishing is a critical industry in Cambodia, with the Tonle Sap providing much of the nation’s fish supply. As water stress diminishes fish stocks, local fishermen are unable to earn enough to support their families, leading to increased poverty and economic instability in rural communities. This also affects the wider economy, as reduced fish exports hit the national market.

Link: The ongoing decline of Tonle Sap Lake poses a direct threat to Cambodia’s economic stability, highlighting the urgent need for sustainable water management.

Water stress reduces the size and depth of Tonle Sap Lake.

Normally, the lake expands up to five times its dry-season size when the Mekong River floods, but during water stress periods, inflow decreases, preventing this seasonal expansion.

This reduction means less water volume, weaker flood pulses, and shrinking floodplains. As a result, there is less space for nutrient-rich sediment to settle, and habitats such as flooded forests and wetlands dry out more quickly.

Therefore, water stress physically impacts Tonle Sap Lake by altering its hydrology and reducing its ecological productivity.

Water stress in Yemen negatively impacts the economy and the livelihoods of farmers.

Yemen is reliant on agriculture, with 37% of the population employed in the sector and the sector constituting 15% of the country’s GDP. Yemen also heavily relies on groundwater for its water supply. As agriculture is a water-intensive activity, groundwater is eventually depleted, leaving Yemen’s farmers with a lower supply of water for agriculture.

As there is now a lower supply of water to meet agricultural demand for water, crops receive less water. This results in the crops being damaged, causing lower crop yield and damaging the livelihoods of farmers. Additionally, the agricultural sector is damaged as there are less crops produced for sale, negatively impacting the economy of the country.

Hence, the economy and farmers’ livelihoods are negatively affected by water stress in Yemen.

Point:
The ongoing Mekong River dispute has significantly impacted the economies of downstream countries by threatening agriculture, fisheries, and livelihoods.

Evidence:
For example, dam construction by upstream countries like China and Laos has disrupted the river’s natural flow, reducing water availability for rice farming and fisheries in Cambodia and Vietnam. According to a 2021 report by the Mekong River Commission, irregular water levels have led to the worst drought in 40 years, affecting over 60 million people who rely on the river for food and income.

Explanation:
These disruptions have not only reduced crop yields and fish catches but have also increased food insecurity and economic vulnerability in rural communities. The lack of consistent water flow undermines traditional economies and forces governments to invest more in mitigation efforts, such as irrigation systems or food imports, placing further strain on national budgets.

Link:
Therefore, the Mekong River dispute poses a serious economic challenge to downstream nations, as upstream development threatens the sustainability of vital sectors and the well-being of millions who depend on the river’s resources.

One economic impact of the Aral Sea Shrinkage is decrease in fish supply, thus reducing livelihood. As water in ponds and rivers decreases, the population of fish decreases. This leaves many jobless as most peoples’ main source of income comes from fishing. Moreover, their food supply will go down as there is less fish. Therefore, an economic impact is the decrease in fish supply, reducing livelihood.

An economic impact of the Tigris-Euphrates River Dispute is farmers who have farms near the river losing revenue.

Near the Tigris-Euphrates River Dispute, there are many farmers and agriculture is the main focus there. Since the supply of water from the Tigris-Euphrates River is their major supply of water, when there is water stress, their supply of water for agriculture decreases. Since most of the farmers, main source of income is agriculture, when there is a reduced supply of water from the river, there is a lesser amount of agriculture that can be cultivated as they require water. The farmers then can only sell lesser products, leading to lesser profit.

An example of this is when farmers from Syria experienced a lesser water supply from the river, they were unable to cultivate many crops and earn much money, which lead to a crisis where many of the farmers in Syria started to face poverty.

Hence, one economic impact of the Tigris-Euphrates River Dispute is many farmers losing revenue.
