The author also says that the reason for fleeing is mostly unknown but most likely because of religious strife, because they were protestant. Other records suggest that Edmund fled From Tavistock due to him being a fugitive of justice, Edmund appears on the Tavistock records in 1548 for stealing a horse and robbing and assaulting a man. He was later granted a pardon, probably due to religious unrest.

On board the Santa Maria was, "linen, woolen cloth, canvas, tools, and implements" (86). He also captured a sailor named Nuño da Silva. Silva had all the maps and Routes for his voyage as he was going to Brazil. The acquisition of these maps was crucial to Drakes success in this voyage. He relocated Silva on his ship and put Thomas Doughty in command of the Santa Maria.
