The state case against Walter Mc Millian enters entirely on the testimony of Ralph Myers. There is no evidence to establish Mr. Mc Millian’s guilt, no physical evidence linking him to the crime, no motive, no witnesses, only the word of a white man. Which was clearly an act of injustice based on racism, infringing his constitutional rights and where the charges against him have been proven to be a false construction of desperate people fueled by bigotry and bias.

The film brings insights as to what happens when racism affects the presumption of guilt.

Five Key Scenes:

Hebert Richardson was sentenced to the electric chair when he should be found Not Criminally Responsible based on his mental health. Since he served in the war, it led him to mental health problems. He should be in a mental health center instead, but because of the unfair system, regrettable he was one of over 65 people who have been executed in Alabama since 1983, most of whom were unable to obtain adequate legal assistance.

Bryan filed a motion to dismiss all charges against McMillian (last trial), where he mentioned that the case is not just about a man trying to prove his innocence, this case becomes more than a trial of justice single defendant, it becomes a "test on whether we are going to be governed by fear or anger or by the rule of law, we cannot claim we are JUST".

In the Senate hearing on the Death Penalty, Bryan gives a speech about poverty and justice. The opposite of poverty is justice; the character of the nation isn't reflected in how we treat the rich and the privileged, but how we treat the poor, disfavored, and condemned. The system has taken more away from an innocent man than has the power to give back. We can change the world for the better, if we look at ourselves closely and honestly, "we all need justice, we all need mercy, and a measure of unmerited grace".

Just Mercy contains two similar scenes that effectively present the daily struggles of a black man. Early in the movie, Bryan is seen walking into the prison to speak with multiple death row inmates. Before entering, it is demanded that he strips in order to be searched. Bryan mentions that he is a lawyer and that it is unreasonable for a strip search to be performed on him. It is heavily implied that the reason for the strip search is due to his skin colour. The second scene is when Bryan is driving during the night and is suddenly pulled over by a police vehicle. Two white policemen demand that Bryan steps out of his vehicle while aiming a firearm at him. The police inspect his vehicle and decide to let him go. When Bryan asks why they pulled him over they respond "we let you go, you should be happy".

The saying desperate people do desperate things to get what they want describes this situation very well. The sheriff asks Ralph Myers to be the key witness in Walter McMillian’s murder trial. Even though in a first recorded statement Myers tells the sheriff that he didn’t see anything. Desperate to ensure that Walter is found guilty of the murder, the sheriff threatens Ralph by putting him on death row, when he refuses to lie on the stand. In fear of death, Ralph agrees to lie on the stand and creates a new testimony that replaces the first statement, and ensures Ralph will not die on death row and that Walter will be found guilty.

Main Message of the Movie:

The film Just Mercy provides many strong messages. It displays how determination can change someone’s life. Walter McMillian was put on death row for a crime he did not commit. Just Mercy is just one man's story of so many about the history of racial bias and inequality in America’s criminal justice system. The film looks at issues regarding racial prejudices, the toll of mass incarcerations, mental illnesses/NCR, the death penalty, and the lack of accountability for prosecutors and law enforcement. We as a community must help create a fair and reliable justice system, and by viewing this film, it is with the hope that more people will get involved and help stop the injustices within the criminal justice system not only in America but all over the world.
