I really didn't become a good writer or a decent writer until high school, I had some really great English teachers that were very patient and nurturing in class, so they spent a lot of time helping me get my wring skills together. I still don't consider myself a great writer but I can get my point across. In college, writing was a little tougher for me, but again I had some great English Professors that helped me along.

I honestly was not a good writer until I started going to college. In high school, my essays would have a lot of empty writing. I had sentences that didn't need to be in my essays but were there to make it look like I wrote a lot . As I took more writing courses and started attending tutoring after school , my writing started to improved. I really enjoyed writing during my years in college and beyond.

Trying to remember when and how i learned writing is hard. I do recall that I was a good writer in 6th grade because of the grades that I received. When i felt and realized I was a good writer was in college. I had a lot of positive feedback from my professors but the one I remember that most is the negative feedback that I got one specific time. I didn't do as well on one of my papers and my professor returning it and telling me with a gentle tap of my paper "I don't know what that was but I am disappointed, I better not see more writing like this because I know and have read better. That and reading my other papers have also helped me realized I am a good writer but I just haven't put the time to be a great one. I love writing but I feel that I have gotten worse since I have not written much like before.

Reading or spelling were never an issue for me, however, when it came to writing paragraphs, essays or even short stories that was when I struggled. But with his revision and peer editing, I was able to see my mistakes. It continues to carry on to college and I think college was were I realized I still needed more practice and so I did. I think I still continue to grow as a teacher when it comes to writing.

I felt like a proficient writer when I was in high school. I had a junior year teacher that was so passionate about writing. He made sure to read every detail in our essays and had us revise it until we turned in our best piece. He would write notes and questions all over our writing and that helped me understand what a good writer is. From grammar to spelling to content and meaning, my junior year English teacher made writing truly enjoyable.

My memories of learning to write come at an early age. My mom is a first grade teacher, and I have an older sister who loved to read. So early on I felt as though I wanted to read and experience what my sister did through books. My mom was also pretty adamant about expressing ourselves through speaking and writing, and she never watered down words for us, even as young children. I would say that by second grade I was creating my own fairy tale stories pretty frequently, writing them, illustrating, and of course, reading them to my family. I was fortunate to have amazing teachers in elementary school who helped foster my love of reading and writing and encouraged me to imagine big! I believe that all of those components helped me be a proficient writer in elementary school.

I think my writing journey began before I even knew I would love writing. As an only child I remember drawing pictures for hours and simultaneously coming up with elaborate stories in my head about what I was drawing. Based on how school standards were set, I was always able to write "well" to fit whatever mold the teacher or subject called for. It was kind of like putting together a puzzle or just following a recipe given.
My honest break through year though has probably been in the past year. I learned to step out of the mold, as well as take time to articulate and analyze thoughts and language from multiple sources.

I was part of the Spelling Bee and loved learning how to spell. Middle school was somewhat a blur.

Remembering those elementary days when my teacher in Grade 5 introduced to the class the Theme Paper Writing activity. She encouraged each students to write about their last night dream, day dream subject, plan for today,or even the the weather. She reminded the class not to waste any single leaf of the notebook if error happened but to keep on writing and writing. She allotted a scheduled for the student to do the rewriting. Once the final draft is finished, she encouraged her students to make a visual representation/poster like on the ideas written. For those who were musically inclined, she let them play their favorite song as the background while the written piece was being read in front of the class. Her approach was indeed very self expressive and multi sensory. Because she believed in No One Throws Away Good Memories.

It is difficult to go back and recollect when I began to be a decent writer, but I do have to give credit to my mother. She would always ask my elementary teachers to give me extra packets during summer vacation to keep my skills sharp. Throughout high school I felt confident in my writing skills but that quickly faded away when I began my theoretical course work in college.

Writing isn’t easy. -‘s writing a good story is even harder, at least for me.
I love art, and want to be a art teacher, so I don’t have to talk and write too much. When I was younger, I used to wonder how Pixar came out with such great movies and short trailers, year after year. Then, I found out a normal Pixar film takes 6 years to develop, and most of that time is spent on the story.
We are just like an artist, writing same as drawing, write the first draft of story in as short a time as possible, then fill in, we might have a few clues about our art, but we don’t know what it will look like until it’s unearthed!
Thank you.
Yao Jin
