This paper discusses the ways that youth from immigrant backgrounds within the United States translanguage and access media. The authors found that immigrant youth use social media both to communicate with friends and to access media from their countries of origin, including music. This research makes me think that I’d try to ground my approach to multilingualism within this understanding of how multilingual students communicate, making sure that I use communication mediums (such as social media) that are familiar and easily accessible to them.

This reading discusses the impact of Jenni Rivera, the first woman to raise the popularity of the corrido genre, on Latina girls' empowerment. It provided more helpful background information on an important pioneer of the corrido and gave me a stronger sense of how music can shape linguistic identity.

This article highlights the experience of Joaquin, a new immigrant arrival to the United States. Joaquin had an incredible knowledge of corridos, but he wasn't really able to bring it into the classroom. I take this as a lesson to be aware of my students' linguistic contexts, not just for music and history but in general, because I'll be able to teach them better that way. Additionally, this article makes me think that I should take a survey of what music my students like so that I could best connect with them.
