In this activity you will consider how language in texts

positions people in different ways, and how this might make us feel, think or act.

Examine how the language in the headlines is chosen and structured in a way to influence the reader to feel a certain way about the issue being discussed. You need to figure out what ideology is behind the headline and what message it wants the reader to believe.

What ideologies are present in the headline?
Rewrite the headline to reflect a different 'truth'.

EXAMPLE

The 'original' headlines removed the onus of responsibility from the perpetrators, distancing them from the horrific acts they committed.

By emphasising that these acts were committed by someone, and did not just spontaneously occur, the headline more clearly reflects the truth of domestic violence.
