He is capable of immense compassion, which is demonstrated when he visits the dying, praying with them, writing out their wills and digging several graves.
    But following the death of Elinor, Mompellion eventually rejects the very principle of religion as all he has felt ‘has been based upon a lie.’ .
    The big turning point in Mompellion's life is the death of his wife, Elinor. It should be a time of celebration in the village as the plague is gone, but Mompellion is in deep sadness. "I thought I spoke for God. My whole life, all I have done, all I have said, all I have felt, has been based upon a lie. Untrue in everything" And he finally has a sex relationship with Anna. His face, in the dark, was unreadable’ .  Usually Mompellion is flexible about breaches in social convention, and deeply compassionate to parishioners who have sinned.
