Description:

This video demonstrates FLIR1 (Forward Looking Infrared System), the second of three U.S Military videos of an unidentified flying object, or what they refer to as a UAP (unidentified aerial phenomenon). As the video begins a brief explanation allows individuals to understand the technology, the sensor on the U.S Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet is in infrared mode. The unidentified object appears as a white shape on the weapon sensor operator, but after changing to TV mode, it appears as a dark, ovular object against the bright sky. After a brief moment, the object suddenly accelerates to the left, out of the sensors view at an unexpected velocity.

Connection:

The footage captured by the FLIR1 has been through the official declassification process of the United States government and was therefore approved for public viewing. By using critical thinking we can analyze the video, inspect the credibility and recognize assumptions based on the information presented. Appeal to authority surrounds the government as they are typically viewed as a reliable source of information. Many individuals recognize an unidentified flying object as a synonym for "alien spaceship”, which only celebrates the unexplained. Thousands of reports regarding unidentified flying object remain unanswered, therefore many establish an emotional connection between UFO's and extra-terrestrial life. The vivid experiences of bright lights, disorientation and strange sounds/experiences alter perception and observations, along with ideology and personal belief support that a UFO was caught on camera by the U.S Navy.

Description:
This video shows two people launching balloons with attached flares into the sky during the night. The balloons were launched in groups of 5 during its first few occurrences, starting January 4, 2009, the finale had 9 flares attached to the balloons on February 17, 2009.

Connection:
Various news outlets reported on the "strange lights" in the sky because the two individuals that created the UFO Morristown hoax called a new station to report the lights. The UFO hoax can be related to unexplained events and skepticism because the people of Morristown also became skeptical of the lights and called 911 to report the mysterious red lights. The hoax gained lots of attention through social media and the perception for the general public was just another UFO mystery, until a video was released showing the balloons attached with flares getting released into the sky. This gave the public a true observation on how the Morristown UFO hoax was created. The hoax was claimed as a "social experiment" to expose how ideology may be used to fool the world.

Description:
This video depicts a UFO in 2014 that was flying in the Chilean navy airspace. It was caught on camera by an army helicopter, who tried to make contact with the object but got no response. Their base radar couldn't detect any objects in the area where it was seen, and the object also emitted some gas which hung in the air. The object stayed in the area for 10 minutes before disappearing. Analyst confirmed the three dimensional object was real, and the video was not tampered with.

Connection:
This video is evident of appeal to authority as the recording was taken from an army helicopter. Coming directly from the army means it is important, and must be real if the government has agreed to release the footage to the public. Using the critical thinking process along with skepticism we can evaluate the evidence and determine bias’, which may help determine alternative answers. While it is difficult to draw a conclusion, alternative answers suggest possibilities such as another navy aircraft. Using critical thinking we can evaluate the evidence to be an army video, which leads to proof by verbosity. The army provides excessive footage, detail, and analyst work on the video to prove it is true. The video claims there has been no tampering, and they thermal track gas emissions which causes the public to become overwhelmed with proof. Agenticity is prevalent in this video as they assigned it to be a UFO, although it could have been a helicopter, blimp or other aircraft. The link to a UFO implies it could have been an extraterrestrial technology, since the two words or synonymous nowadays. This video also contains the unexplained as analysts and researchers break down the video, but nobody could explain the objects true identity. A few flaws include that these results cannot be verified, meaning its progress has stopped, and the video has deliberately caused mystery. A limitation within this video is the distance, if the aircraft was able to get closer and obtain a more thorough image of the UFO, additional information would be available.

Description:
This archived document is a declassified document released from the United States air force. From the years 1947 to 1969, the air force recorded, documented, investigated, and evaluated over 12,000 UFO sightings throughout the USA. Their evaluation was clear as they stated that no UFO posed a threat to national security, that there is no evidence to state the UFO had technological advancements, as well that none of the objects are extraterrestrial vehicles.

Connection:
This archived document shows that most “sightings” were false perceptions or observations. Overall, it is difficult for witnesses to describe the sightings and many eye witness accounts were faulted, lied about, or reported nonsense. Using the critical thinking process along with skepticism we can recognize assumptions, emotions and biases which help select an alternative solution to each report. An emotional connection was established as some reporters allowed their emotions to take control during the incidents, causing a blur rather than rational thoughts. While researchers proposed many alternative solutions to roughly 12,000 cases, some cases remained unexplained. This does not necessarily mean extraterrestrial life, it does however mean that at a point in time between the 40s and 70s, multiple flying objects could not be identified. Since project blue book is a government document, it leads us to see the appeal to authority. Although the government published it, this does not prove the research is credible. There’s also evidence of proof by verbosity, as the researchers discuss 12,000+ cases incredibly in-depth to identify specific details. The amount of information and number of cases makes it difficult for the average person to sift through. It is difficult to disprove the information in the face of so much “truth”. There are some flaws surrounding the unexplained events, which lead to a stop in progress. Another flaw surrounds the research as it was only completed because money was involved. A third flaw could be the fact that the entire document just deliberately creates mystery, while many of the 12,000 reported cases have been debunked, the government has admitted they have no explanation for nearly 1000 cases. Limits include reliance on personal eye witness accounts, limited public participation as well as limited information sharing and access before the ease of the internet.

Description:
This article is about the general population misinterpreting UFO sightings due to the lack of knowledge and not understanding the fundamentals of Space. A former NASA engineer "James Oberg", breaks down popular UFO videos and explains what you are actually seeing instead of the UFO.

Connection:
The article is based around conspiracy theorist which relates to confirmation bias because the theorist have a predetermined belief in UFOs and aliens. All the videos in this article demonstrate some type of abnormal presence such as a bright white flare in the night sky. The theorist deliberately create mystery by exclaiming that the phenomenon must be a UFO. Many videos and images that seem like unexplained mysteries can be solved using critical thinking, peer support, or expert opinions such as ex NASA space engineer "James Oberg" in this article. An example of skepticism in the article would be in 2015 when people in South California saw a bright white flair in the night sky that was actually caused by a secret unarmed missile test by the US Navy. By applying skepticism, critical thinking and evaluating all possible answers before determining a conclusion, one may be able figure out the true meaning behind many skeptical unexplained UFO sightings.

Description:

This photo is an image of the "Roswell Daily Record" front page. This front page was mainly based on the results of the Roswell incident and investigation that ensued. The government reported that the "UFO crash" was actually just a USA air force balloon that had come down, and that no extraterrestrial life forms were involved.

Connection:

This image shows how our appeal to authority can sometimes be misleading. This picture is showing how the government is confirming that the UFO seen crashing near Roswell, was a weather balloon. The fact that the military was covering the incident supports its truthfulness, which later caused conspiracy theories. Using critical thinking we can gather the information this picture tells us to evaluate biases, assumptions and emotions and create alternative answers. We must use skepticism in the governments reports to see if there are alternative answers to the events. Some conspiracy theorists believe the government used simplicity for the general public, stating it would be too dangerous to inform the public of alien life. Realistically, the incident could remain unexplained as there was a military presence, meaning a possible cover up. Many individuals believe in the agenticity; seeing that the government has involvement with UFO's supports the belief of alien life coming to earth. A flaw in this picture is the content, it does not show the “crash landing” site, only a man with the supposed balloon. A limitation would be the restrictions during the incident that limited the public and press to probe deeper into the military presence and site.

Description:
This photo humorously illustrates how easily everyday objects can be manipulated or unidentified as an unidentified flying objects.

Connection:

This photo provides a connection to patternicity as many individuals report unidentified flying objects that turn out to be patterns or shapes familiar to the human eye. Humans have a difficult time interpreting and rationalizing the unexplained which support the belief of alien life and alien technology. Critical thinking and skepticism disprove many UFO sighting claims; as evidence is gathered regarding the sighting, credibility is verified, and assessments are often completed to see if the sighting can it be reproduced. Although many UFO sightings are disproved, confirmation bias allows many individuals to continue believing in the events that coincide with their personal beliefs. A limitation shown in this photo is perspective, as the alteration of perspective can change ones interpretation of something. This limitation relates back to patternicity because perspective, lighting and altered perception may influence what humans believe is an unidentified flying object.

1. The most surprising fact learned about the topic of UFO's is that roughly 33% of American adults believe terrestrial life forms are visiting Earth via UFO's.

2. UFO's are relevant in day to day life because the pursuit for extra-terrestrial life continues with each UFO sighting. An example of a recent UFO sighting was March 7th 2020, in Stoney Creek Ontario when an individual reported seeing strange lights moving from the Southwest sky to the Northeast.

3. The research I found the most interesting was the government videos of UFOs. Government conspiracy theories and cover-ups are a common theory surrounding UFOs and the government involvement. Through researching UFO incidents and reviewing UFO videos, it is evident that the government has become more open with their research and findings related to UFOs. I believe as technology advances and society becomes more open to the idea of extra-terrestrial life, the public and government will collaborate to identify where these UFOs originate. Many of these videos were fascinating as they baffled both the public and government officials. These rare sightings may not provide answers, but they do leave us with more exciting world mysteries.

4. I will remember the information that was declassified in the project blue book findings. I found it astonishing that the government would put together a task force to investigate such sightings. While it was impressive they identified over 12,000 cases, they do admit to leaving many sightings "unidentified". The unidentified objects are interesting as it leaves the government vulnerable to questioning and leaves room to create mystery.

5. The pseudoscience belief that is most harmful is emotional connection because it creates a blockade between logical decisions and emotionally based decisions. Emotions may affect the nature of a decision and the speed at which one makes a choice. Anger can lead to impatience, rash decision-making, while excitement might cause someone to make quick decisions without considering other options. Emotionally based decisions may cause poor judgement, bias and recklessness decision making. The least harmful pseudoscience belief is unexplained because although the questions have yet to be answered, critical thinking and skepticism are continually used as an attempt to provide answers. An example of unexplained would be UFO's and alien lifeforms, they are not yet confirmed or denied and therefore the search for an answer continues.

6. If you could pass on your knowledge to a family member or friend, what do you think is the most important thing to pass on?
If passing knowledge about UFO's onto a family member or friend important information that I would provide is the value of critical thinking when analyzing the information provided. It is crucial to remain skeptical when viewing video footage, websites or images claiming UFO sightings.
