It shows that people will use anything and anyone in order to empower their cause. The contrast of the facial expressions is very ironic because like the panel stated “that very day we shouldn’t have: on “Black Friday” there were so many killed in one of the neighborhood”. The irony displayed in their body language during the Revolution (being content and happy) in contrast to when Marjane’s mother finds out was very unexpected. The author’s usage of this element is somewhat humorous. The author decides to bold "their splendor" when the Shah is referring to the people, and because the grandmother is telling this story with the purpose of showing the selfishness and cruelty of the Shah, also exhibited with him with his arms raised on the podium, and no people surrounding it, it shows the coming irony in his rule and his hypocrisy in his crowning speech. Most of the time an excess of one color is often used to evoke certain emotion that the characters are experiencing. One of her more used examples is having an image that relies heavily on the black with little to know black space. For example, the family loving and playing Monopoly, a wholly capitalistic game, but also protesting in favor of communist and far-left leaning values exhibited a subtle irony in the first 3 chapters. Furthermore, Marjane's father forbidding Mehri's love interest and justifying it due to her different class setting completely contradicts his values as a protester; he protests to end classes, but also helps instill them, especially by not giving Mehri the rights Marjane has. Marjane's family's wealthy lifestyle only exhibits this further; Marjane mentions that she is ashamed to drive a Cadillac and live lavishly while she protests for equality and the ending of social classes; a subtle irony that begins to distort the ideas of the revolution in many. The dramatic irony of all of this comes with the knowledge that Khomeini's reign was just as bad as the Shah's after the Revolution, even though the people had put him into power expecting him to make everything right.
