I think social media makes people more social, as stated in the video, at least ⅓ of the world is using social media. Which means more people can now interact with each other, even if they are on the other side of the world. In my own experience, social media allows me to talk with my friends and family back in the Philippines. And talk to my friends here in Canada since I can’t meet up with them due to the pandemic.

I think that social media makes people less social because One statement made in the video which talks about how social media psychological addiction as supposed to a substance addiction in which brain scans of these people actually show a similar impairment of regions that those with drug dependence have. Specifically there is a clear degradation of white matter in the regions that control emotional processing, attention, and decision making. Because social media provides immediate rewards with very little effort required, your brains begins to rewire itself making you desire these stimulations. And you begin to crave more of this neurological excitement after each interaction. This sounds or relates to a drug. One example/experience from my own life that kind of relates to this is that a bit after covid I had a group of friends which I met through gaming. We would play everyday non stop but we would text and text online and talk about different things. We then all found out we live all near each other, so then we decided to meet up all one day at the mall. The problem with this though is that I don’t know them in real life but only through the game and messaging on instagram. So since I haven’t seen my actual friends in a while because of covid I have not socialized with a lot of people that I know so then this came up and when we met it was awkward because it was a first time, I didn’t personally know them very well, and I was a bit shy because of all the online interacting and not face to face. So in this point I was less social because I didn’t have a social interaction with my good friends in a while. So then when I met up with my other friends I was shy and was awkward but then we met up more times and we all talk and do other things. So know we are comfortable meeting each other face to face again if we ever do.

I think social media apps make people more social. I think this because, while 30-40% of face-to-face conversations involve communicating our own experiences, around 80% of social media communication is self-involved. An example of this can be seen in my own experience, in the COVID-19 pandemic; I tend to use social media more when I am made to quarantine (in such times), meaning the only way I am able to communicate with others (such as friends or distant family), is through social media.

Phantom vibration syndrome can be bad for your mental health because you’re experiencing something that isn’t there. Phantom vibration syndrome is when a person feels their phone vibrate as if they got a message. But in reality their phone didn’t vibrate and they're just feeling things that never happened. Kind of like hallucinating, both involve experiencing something that never happened. And both can cause someone to go crazy, phantom vibration syndrome might take a long time to make someone go crazy but it is possible. Constantly experiencing something that never happened, can make you feel anxious and give you a sense that maybe you are crazy.

In my opinion, it really depends on the type of person and how addicted they are to certain apps. However, I definitely do think that in the long run it can make people less social as some will start to prefer to meet people using social media apps instead of in person. Moreover, people can become less social as they lose in person communication skills the more addicted they are to their social media apps. I like to think that if you have a balance like I have developed then it shouldn't affect how social you are but if people become glued to their phones effects will start to show sooner or later.

In the video it also talks about how your brain rewires due to easily socially interacting so it makes you less social in real life. For me, after covid lockdown the first time when we went away from school, when I met my friends again the first time I was more quiet. After that it got better though. So social media makes people less social due to anonymity.

No matter where you are or what website you use, there will always be at least one person that doesn’t like you or likes to make people feel bad. When using social media, there are people who won’t like your posts or people who just want to make you feel bad, these people are called internet trolls. These people will purposely post hate against you, and when you read too much into it, you start to feel bad about yourself. And you start to feel anxious or stressed whenever you go online, and possibly even become depressed.

If a person’s mindset is not strong enough these effects can develop easily. People start to really worry about what others think about them and try to “belong” which causes high levels of anxiety and stress. In addition, people see influencers who live in “perfect” lives and have a lot of nice things. This can make people feel increased levels of depression thinking their lives are not good enough.

One of the things she said was “We are constantly comparing ourselves to others'', this is what I think has the biggest potential to become a full blown mental health issue. People do it everyday and it has a lot of impacts. I remember when me and my friends used to follow this one influencer and we bought a lot of things that we now realize were useless purchases but we bought the things anyway just because they had it. Additionally, another reason why it’s a major problem is because people go as far as changing what they do everyday as a result of viewing other people’s highlight reels.

On social media many people want to be known or gain more followers, so they share a lot of things about themselves. This was me when I got Instagram. I did not really talk to people at first in school but wanted to be known on social media I shred things about myself such as thigs I wear and eat to gain attention, which gave me pleasure.

I believe that social media apps make people more social because while 30-40 percent of face-to-face conversations involve communicating our own experiences, around 80 percent of social media communication is self-involved. This means that people are more comfortable to express their thoughts and feelings behind their screen rather than in real life, this makes certain individuals more social. An example of this can be seen through our COVID-19 situation that is going on all over the world. Since we are unable to see others in person in relation to the hard core restrictions put out by our governments, social media is the only way we can communicate with one another without breaking these rules.

One of the stressors which I agree could become a full blown mental health issue is F.O.M.O. Why I think that is because F.O.M.O is when you get a social anxiety and are missing the fear of connection, event, or opportunity. A collection of Canadian Universities found that 7/10 students said they would get rid of their social networking accounts if it were not for fear of being left out of the loop. My own experience is that whenever I would be on social media and I see my friends talking about something I always want to include myself because I want to know what they are talking about, and what they are going to do or what we could talk about and make plans to go out or get on a game to play together. Another experience of mine is when all my friends are on a game and I’m not on probably because I can’t play at the moment but I never want to miss what they are going to play or when they ask me to play I feel like I have to get on so that we could all have a fun time and play something. That’s something I have struggled with a little bit but I feel like I am now controlling that well.

My first step would improve people’s social media wellness as they would not be addicted to social media apps as they have control. The second step would also be very beneficial to improve people’s social media wellness as people can tend to expose themselves to much about what they do during the day and in general which can lead to them getting judged. If they limit what they post this can easily be avoided.

Stop The Hate: There will always be one or two haters on social media, but at least trying to make the experience better is worth it. In the ted talk, she talked about how people might think “Wow their life is amazing, my life is so garbage, im so unlucky.” This will have a very negative effect on people. For me it was different, when I used to be overweight, I would go on social media and see a bunch of people that were fit and toned. This is a mental health care issue because you brain is constantly worrying about where you fit in what I missed and more. This causes you to go back to social media and become addicted. An example is one of my friends had a birthday party and did not invite me, but the people he invited kept posting what they were doing making look at each post coming back each time to see what I missed or do I still fit in that group. She said a “collection of university conducted research that 7/10 students would get rid of their social media counts if it weren’t for the fear of being left Out the loop”

These 2 steps would definitely help in people’s media wellness because some people don’t think before they post something. They don’t know that it will never get deleted no matter what it says. This can help because people will be avoiding causing issues for themselves online. Also, the best version of yourself is the real you helps a lot because there are a lot of backseeted comments that others make towards other people. If you let the bad comments get disregarded, you will be a more confident person, and you will know that you are the best you can be. This will not let anyone else bother you too.

Phantom Vibration Syndrome occurs in relation to over-involvement with one’s cell phone. This causes our brains to think an itch is a vibration from our phone. Our brains are being triggered in away they have never been before in history. The overuse in phones rewrites our nervous system. This is bad for your mental health because this shows that you have become addicted and reliant to your phone

In her presentation, she says how she’s constantly comparing herself to her friend’s when they post about something. “Why is she at the beach and I’m at home?” As someone who also compares themselves to others, I can say this is true. A lot of people will try and compare themselves to others because we want what they have. That can lead to a mental health issue like depression because you are constantly comparing, and not striving to achieve that goal.

Question 6:

Response: One point that they mentioned inside the video that I strongly agree with is the fact that boys are pressured in society to be the “toughies.” Us teenage boys have an invisible standard to be the best we can. We also get a lot of questions when we get close with other people. Boys also have to hide their emotions constantly. When we show our emotions we are looked down at or we are looked at as weak. I can see where they are coming from personally from when I was a child especially. When I was a child, I didn’t hang out with other boys as much as I did with girls. This led to people getting mad at me since I was talking to the girls. I didn’t mean to do this, I just wanted to talk to people who were nice but the boys weren’t. Another thing is that when I was in kindergarten, I cried when I got hurt. Some of the people were coming up and asking me if I was okay but I remember that there were this group of boys laughing at me and calling me weak. This didn’t affect me because I don’t care but it goes to show that boys do have standards that you may not see at eye.

My first added step would be to find something else either than social media rather than using it. It can help because maybe if you have a passion for art and you want to show it off to everyone, you don’t have to. Just because you want to get other people’s acceptance for you to feel better about yourself does not make it better. My next step is to reflect on your day after without social media. “Do I feel better without it?” “How much has it changed me?”. By reflecting, you recognized the problem and you are acting on it. It helps with wellness because you are spending less time being less productive, and actually doing something productive and trying to work on the problem.

Online Harassment - I do agree with her explanation on how online harassment has the potential to become a full blown mental health issue. This is because she states that this could potentially be the worst stressors on social media and later backs her statement with solid facts. For example, 40% offline adults have experienced online harassment, 73% have witnessed online harassment, and 100 % of the time, it is worse if you are female, LGBTQ, and or a person of colour.

The stressor called the “Highlight Reel” was explained very well and I mostly agree with it. Others see the highlights of other people’s lives and wonder why they aren’t doing something like that. This causes the person looking at the post to feel depressed, and wish they were the one in the photo or video. The part I don’t agree with is that the person is left feeling depressed and does nothing about it. I often saw highlights of other people after accomplishing something, and instead of depressingly sitting there and doing nothing, I decided I was going to do something about it so that I could be just as happy as them. I’m talking about school grades though, I’m realistic and know that I can’t become a multimillionaire celebrity just for trying to become one. For the people who look at the celebrity highlights and feel saddened, they need to understand that the celebrities their looking at are few among the billions of people in this world, and if they can’t see that, that’s when the depression turns into a full-blown mental issue.

The first step to improve social media wellness is to protect yourself. Online, I’ve seen a lot of people try and take others information and possibly steal from people. That’s why online, you should always know how to stop a possible hacker, because if you don’t, it could be a lot more than your mental health that will be ruined.

The second step is to know who you're talking to. Online, people scam and take from others, that’s why it always good to know who you're speaking with. If you don’t know the person you're talking to in real life, limit the conversation in order to protect yourself and possibly others.

One point made by the group is that they don’t feel comfortable telling people how they feel. I don’t agree with this at all, I think if you really need to tell people what you are feeling, nobody's holding you back. The only person who truly stops you from doing something is yourself.
