  • In 1956 one of the first heart-lung machines was developed by Doctor  Willem Johan "Pim" Kolff 
  • 1957: Concept of the artificial heart is brought to reality by  Dr. Kolff and Dr. Tetsuzo Akutsu  at the Cleveland Clinic
  • 1969: The first artificial heart transplant is implanted into a human by heart surgeon  Dr. Denton Cooley.
  • 2002:  The CardioWest's temporary total artificial heart pivotal clinical study is finally completed. 
  • 2004: The artifical heart is given the name  SynCardia temporary CardioWest™ Total Artificial Heart.
  • 2010: first U.S total artificial heart patient is discharged from hospital with the freedom portable driver.
