Tier one contains universal prevention and support strategies that should be used with all children. We can do this by giving every child a high-quality home and school environment where they are given the tools they need to learn and grow as people. They also need to have nurturing and responsive relationships with the people they interact with on a daily basis for healthy social development.

Tier 2 is secondary social and emotional approach for children at risk for social and emotional delays. Not all children will need this level of support, which is why it is higher on the pyramid. In this tier, targeted social-emotional support strategies are used with children who need a little extra help to prevent social-emotional problems from developing. Students are given support developing social skills, problem solving, self-regulating themselves, etc.

Teachers who receive training on how to teach social and emotional skills are much more successful in utilizing the pyramid model in their instruction. The articles Group Coaching on Pre-School Teachers’ Implementation of Pyramid Model Strategies: A Program Description, written by Fettig, & Artman-Meeker (2016) and Evaluating The Implementation of the Pyramid Model for Promoting Social-Emotional Competence in Early Childhood

Classrooms, written by Hemmeter et. al (2016) support this. Hemmeter et. al's (2016) study, for example, found that teachers who received the personal development training successfully implemented 69.9% of The Pyramid Model material. Teachers in the no personal development training group only successfully utilized 44.2% of The Pyramid Model practices. Teachers with the personal development training were more aware of their students emotions and interests, had a more positive learning environment, and were more nurturing towards their students.
