When thinking about the growth and development of children, there are many factors. These include culture, religious background, family units and economic status. All of these things can affect how a child learns in the classroom. If a child is from a different ethnicity and English isn't their native language, they will have a harder time learning because they can't understand.

Different cultures have different values, and that can show in the way children behave in the classroom.

Implicit Biases and Cultural Competence

Implicit Bias is when someone has opinions or attitudes about different cultures subconsciously through influences in their lives.

Cultural Competence refers to the ability to be respectful when interacting with people from different cultures.

If an educator is subconsciously biased toward a student from a different culture, that student may feel unwelcomed in the classroom and that could affect their learning.

I have always tried to be respectful of the students I have had in my class, talking about their heritage and including it in our lessons, or respecting the beliefs of the culture.

Framework for Developing Cultural Competence

We as educators want our students to not only feel welcomed and represented in the classroom. This will make them more ager to learn. It is important to learn about the cultures of the students in your room to achieve these things. Assessments will help educators know how the students are progressing throughout the school years, especially if they are English Learning students.

Supporting Cultural Competency in Early Childhood - 4-C

Things that educators can do in the classrooms to make these students feel welcome can be as simple as having different flesh-colored crayons available, having dolls, toys and books that represent diversity, and sharing songs from different cultures.

Impact of Implicit Bias on Teacher Perceptions

Having implicit bias as an educator can cause them to not only treat the student differently, but the families as well. If the student feels like they are being treated differently, it can cause them to not want to learn or act out.

For instance, a teacher may think that because a student is African American, they are not as smart as the other students or that they may have behavior issues. This can cause the teacher to treat the student differently, treating them like lesser than the other students. This can also cause the other students in the classroom to treat the other students the same.

Families can feel like their child is not welcomed and take it to administration, and the teacher could get in trouble.
