Molly and her mother shows her Aboriginal identity by representing Aboriginal people having a strong connection with nature and their surroundings. This is displayed in the film ‘Rabbit Proof Fence’ to show the film convention of subtitles to help represent the values of the Australian culture. The film convention is used to create meaning for the audience to demonstrate what Molly’s mother is saying about the spirit bird in their indigenous language. The convention of subtitles helps the audience to understand the Australian identity because, the message of the image demonstrates people having a strong connection to their environment and nature by using the spirit bird and showing us that the spirit bird is important to the aboriginal culture and also helps us to see that aboriginal people have a strong bond with nature. Through the continuation of subtitles, the still image of Molly and her mother talking about the spirit bird also help the audience to understand what they were saying in their indigenous language, this shows us a part of the Australian identity because it allows us to view what language the aboriginal culture speaks and what they are saying about the spirit bird.

Molly show the viewers her Australian identity because of her act of compassion towards her sister Daisy. Even though Molly herself was dehydrated, hungry and tired, she decided to carry her sister. This was displayed through the use of extreme long shot which showed the long distance they still have to walk. Molly displays her compassionate personality as part of her Australian Identity as Australian’s sympathetic and caring people.

The film “Rabbit Proof Fence” represents Australian identity because it showcases the diversity of Australia and that Australia has aboriginal culture. In aboriginal culture spirituality is a very common belief and that animals (specifically birds in this film) are a sign of hope and protection. At the near end when Molly and Daisy collapsed the bird had flown past and that had motivated them to keep on going.
