-One of the main features in pretty much all title sequences is introduction of main/side characters. When looking at openings like jackie brown for example we see the character and we follow her walking so we have some idea of what kind of things she does.

To set the mood of the film:
-The opening of the film also sets the mood so the audience knows what to expect for the rest of the film. For example in reservoir dogs we are introduced to a group of men all wearing suits so the audience can assume that it will be a gangster film.

To show ownership:
-At the start of the film there will aways be an ident to show the companies that own the film (the production company and the distribution company).
