They worked to make sure that no country would have the advantage over them if another war were to break out. The U.S.S.R also set to spread communism over onto the rest of Asia and Europe and stop Western Democracy and ideals. The U.S.A saw both the spread of communism and Russia's increasing pile of nuclear bombs and decided they would work to spread Democracy and stomp out Communism. People now feared the prospect of Communism and the possibility that someone they know could turn out to be a Communist. During these years of fear the Government and Government officials started to declare those who they did not like a Communist in order to black list them from there jobs or justify there imprisonment. This form of slander eventually became known as McCarthyism, named after the famed Senator Joseph McCarthy, who notoriously launched highly publicized probes into the alleged Communist infiltration of the Department of State, the White House and even the Army. This lead to the birth of the Communist North Vietnam and the Democratic South Vietnam, which attempted to unify but was prevented from doing so by the U.S who feared that the Country's unification would lead it to become a Communist nation. The U.S pledged to protect all nations including South Vietnam during the Cold War, which then lead to the Gulf of Tonkin incident where the U.S.S Maddox and U.S Destroyer Turner Joy reported that they had been ambushed by Soviet build North Vietnam torpedo boats. This marked the United States official entry into the war where they attempted to stop all fighting and protect the stationed American troops and South Vietnam. This eventually became an impossible task however, with the fierce offensive from the North Vietnamese forces and the downturn of the South Vietnamese Government. In retaliation, the Soviet Union decided to place warheads of their own in secret in Fidel Castro's Communist Cuba. Upon their discovery the U.S scrambled to find a way to get the nukes out of Fidel Castro's hands. After weighing the option of nuclear war and placing a blockade around Cuba the U.S sought out agreements with Russia to disarm the nukes which had been placed in Turkey and promise to not invade Cuba in exchange for taking away the nuclear warheads in Cuba. It had started with the Soviets launching an intercontinental ballistic missile into earth's orbit armed with an artificial satellite dubbed "Sputnik". This was the fist man-made object to reach space, a surprise for America which saw space as the next frontier for exploration and exploitation. America from then on was determined to outdo the Soviets and achieve victory in their squabble for superior space control, leading to the creation of NASA. The Soviets soon took off though reaching achievement after achievement with Luna 2 making the first space probe to hit the moon and Yuri Gagarin becoming the first person to orbit the earth. In 1989, there was a standoff between the Russian and American troops stood off at the wall, resulting the the Russian troops backing down and even destroying the wall due to pressure from the German population at the border. The loss of there Communist states as well as there push to a more Capitalist system were in part due to new reforms brought on by the Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev like the withdrawal from the arms race. Groups slowly formed to challenge the current Communist System. Eventually the groups took over Government after Gorbachev retired from his position and let the newly formed groups take over in Government, officially ending the Soviet Union and the Cold War along with it.
