Inspired by a deterioration in traditional religious beliefs in the New England Colonies, Johnathan Edwards, as a leading preacher of the First Great Awakening, argues that sinners should follow Christianity and convert. In his emotional and fiery to the common people, Edwards writes to scare people of the dangers of hell and the judgment of God, which is more fearful and painful than the human mind can understand To create a convincing argument, Edwards establishes an atmosphere of fear and divine wrath.

Jonathan Edwards strikes fear from the very beginning of the sermon, highlighting the consequences and fate of sinners. By opening the sermon with a description of the pit of hell, Edwards describes the eventual place.

During the height of the Great Awakening, a religious revival, Jonathan Edwards, on behalf of “natural men”, emphasizes that your final destination is predetermined. In his harsh and vivid sermon, Edwards preaches in order to warn about the danger of eternal damnation awaiting unrepentant sinners, ultimately persuading people to confess Christ as their only savior and be reborn. To create a sense of fear, Edwards depicts the wrath of God through his hand, a spider, and bow and arrow metaphors.

Jonathan Edwards instills fears from the very beginning of the document. By using the imagery of a spider, Edwards illustrates the helpless state of sinners in the face of God’s wrath.
