John Hendricks noticed the rise of satellite-delivered cable networks. At the time, HBO created access to documentary entertainment, which intrigued him, however they didn’t have a specific channel for documentaries. Hendricks needed a channel of documentaries as a professor to show his class, so he decided he would make the channel himself.

In order to air the documentaries, Discovery Channel worked with BBC. However, without proper funding, they owed 1 million dollars to BBC, with only $5,000 to spend. Discovery was looking for a way to pay this off, and they did this by selling part of the ownership to their company to Liberty Media, Newhouse, and Cox Cable.
