Name: Wadi Al-Hitan (whale valley)
Location: Egypt – 150km South-West of Cairo
Landscape/landforms: Wadi Al-Hitan is a desert that has cliffs and buttes made out of sandstone. Other than that the landscape itself is pretty barren.
Significance: Wadi Al-Hitan is a site where hundreds of fossils that belonged to the earliest forms of whales – Archaeoceti. The fossils there are high in numbers and in good quality so it is a good place for palaeontologists to study the Archaeoceti. It also helps palaeontologists study the evolution of whales.
Ways it is being managed & protected (2-3):
Wadi Al-Hitan is under the 'unequivocal legal protection' of Egyptians law under Nature Protectorates reserves. No vehicles are allowed in the site as it is a part of the World Heritage Zone. Since it is also a place for tourism there are facilities provided there to let people appreciate the landscape whilst protecting the landscape.
