1. 1- Develop action plan around cultural awareness, identify useful training offerings and enroll.

Develop and pass along the learned information to Journey staff through in service
Create a cultural diversity day or more intentional Journey wide offering for Black history month.
Attend job fairs and other black oriented events (FFBWW Wellness fair etc.) in hopes to spread the word about Ujima and recent efforts as well as attempt to hire more black clinicians.

Looking beyond race in order to break the stigma around mental health treatment and help Ujima staff members understand and address every cultural aspect that may impact a consumer's treatment.

Money and time for more training on cultural identity and customs and overall diversity amongst black Dane County communities. Specifically finding or creating more skills based training that focuses on addressing bias amongst treatment professionals and treating black people for mental health/AODA concerns.

Learning from the experience of our Ujima consumers and their views of Journey.
Attempting to hire more black interns and clinicians.

Why is diversity important in Ujima?

Though there is diversity within the black community in Dane County, Ujima is focused on support black people with mental health and AODA needs in Dane County. This is an inherent approach at supporting a diverse population. Diversity is more represented in the culture and background of Ujima consumers and less represented in race. For example: Ujima supports US born black people as well as black people born outside the US. Cultural diversity comes up in many ways amongst the Ujima population. One regular way it comes up in addressing differences in family values and raising children. When supporting consumers of African descent, the work can be about acculturation-how family and social customs from their home country differ from the familial and social customs in the US.
