Language and culture shape a persons identity by possibly limiting how they express themselves. The ways we speak, act, traditions we hold, and our community we surround ourselves with all revolves around our identity. Our language tells other where we come from and what matters to us.

Example: A student who speaks both Spanish and English may feel welcomed to use both of these languages versatile in the classroom. If a teacher supports the students concept of code meshing, instead of diminishing it. The student is going to feel more welcomed and supported in the classroom.

How does language bias that children might experience impact students' academics?

When students experience language bias, they are being judged or corrected by the way they speak. This overall is going to take away quickly from their confidence in themselves and their academic performance. Students are going to start taking lower risks, participating in class, or being engaged throughout it. Over time the lack of participation is going to start taking away from their reading, math, or overall academic performance. For this to help me, I thought of how it compares to a ladder vs a rock wall. When the teacher tells a student that there is only one correct way to speak, they are saying their is only one correct way to get to the end goal or end of the ladder. Where as if a teacher looks at it from more perspectives the teacher will notice that using multiple languages helps a student learn and will support them to get to the end goal. A rock wall will show that there are multiple ways a student can get to the end goal.

Is there anything "special" that you should be thinking about when we change the language context to learning English as an additional language?

When teaching/ learning English we as teachers need to remember that their first language is a large part of their culture and identity's. As teachers, we need students to first understand that their first language isn't something to get rid of but its something to build on. This is going to lead back to the language bias question where if students don't feel supported or welcomed in the classroom for their first language, then they will have a much harder time growing socially and academically. Not only should students use their first language in the classroom to build on their English but they should also tell the class about their language and culture so all students can learn more about it.
