1. Mr. Raymond hangs out with black folks and everyone judges him for it. So he pretends to drink so they Maycomb will leave him alone. (Chapter 20)
2. Tom Robinson was accused of raping Mayella Ewell and was proved guilty, even though he didn't do it. Just because he was black the jury voted 'guilty'. (Chapter 21)
3. Scout was told by Jem and Dill that she was being a girl because she didn't want to go to the Radley house. In reality, she just didn't want to go. (Chapter 5)

A character who embodies this theme is Atticus. Atticus, even though he is white, defends Tom Robinson, who is black, against the charges of rape. Back then it wasn't really common to see blacks and white hanging out. So when Atticus defends Tom in court he states, "This case is as simple as black and white." he truely literally means between the two races.

A symbol that represents Atticus is the flower Iris. Iris means wisdom and respect. Atticus is very wise when it comes to his kids. To the townspeople he has nothing, but respect from them, except from a fellow Ewell.
