The themes of control are examined in The Lottery and A&P. The protagonists in The Lottery are held captive by tradition and fear, which stops them from challenging the lottery's methodology. People follow tradition because they are concerned about what might occur if they don't. The narrative implies that this unquestioning loyalty to tradition is an oppressive tactic that can potentially be harmful. The expectations of his society and the authority figures in his life dominate Sammy, the protagonist of A&P. He believes that the restrictions on his personal freedom and individuality imposed by his conservative community have trapped him. The narrative implies that cultural expectations and conventions may function as a type of restraint that stifles personal growth and creativity.(Ng Kwan Lam Issac)

According to the story Harrison Bergeron by Kurt Vonnegut, it states that Hazel “was referring to the forty-seven pounds of birdshot in a canvas bag, which was padlocked around George's neck. ‘Go on and rest the bag for a little while," she said. ‘I don't care if you're not equal to me for a while.’” It represents that the equality of citizens is not required by the citizens, but by the government. Hazel does not care about equality, she just wishes George to have a rest on his neck for a while. On the contrary, in the story The Lottery by Shirley Jackson, the villagers restart the lottery because the first time is not fair enough. It shows that the villagers required an extreme fair in the village.

Therefore, the theme of these two short stories is equality.

Comparing ‘all summer in a day and ‘ Harrison Bergeron’

To begin with, the theme of these stories involved the rebellion of the majority with the individuals but there is a different consequences to each other for the protagonist. Why are these are talking about the rebellions in society? In ‘all summer in a day’, Margot is the only one children who have ever seen the sun before and she has been marginalized in the classroom since she has said some kind of truth that breaks the consciousness of other children. There is a conflict between Margot and those children that the conception of the sun. But as the consequence, when those children have seen the sun in their eyes, they knew it is a misconception about their previous knowledge about the sun. All of them are realized they’re wrong and unlocked the door of the closet and their mind.

However, the consequence of ‘Harrison Bergeron’ is another miserable story. Harrison tried to assist the control of the ‘Handicapper General’ is lead to his death of him. Then, there is nothing changed in the end? Even his parents can’t remember it is their son. The control is no end.

The difference is the protagonist’s rebellion does it able to change anything in the consequence. Since the social system was stronger in the ‘Harrison Bergeron’ led to a miserable end for the protagonist.

A&P is similar in theme to Harrison Bergeron because both stories deal with individualism, when Sammy quits, he asserts his individualism. On the other hand, Harrison Bergeron is the only character in the story who defies the government’s handicap regulations, and the degree to which the government and news media villainize him shows individualism.

In the short story, " The A&P," by John Updike, the author seeks to make his point using an unlikely setting and scenario. Using a supermarket as a metaphor for a society, Updike illustrates how breaking the norms of society evokes fear and brings about intolerance in people.

'Harrison tore the weights of his handicaps like wet tissue paper, tore straps guaranteed to support the weight of five thousand pounds ' is an example of hyperbole used in Harrison Buggeron. Vonnegut exaggerates the way Harrison tears the straps.

According to The Lottery, “Tessie Hutchinson was in the centre of a cleared space by now, and she held her hands out desperately as the villagers moved in on her.” For A&P, “I could see Lengel in my place in the slot, checking the sheep through.” No matter whether Tessie Hutchinson or Sammy, they could all see a group of things moving like “villagers” and “sheep”. They cannot change the direction of movement, just as fate cannot change, it is fixed. So, the theme of the two short stories is “fate”.

Theme:Rebellion(Harrison Bergeron & A&P)
Firstly, both stories focus on rebellion, Harrison focus on the rebellion for policy of equality and A&P focus on rebellion for social norms.
In Harrison Bergeron,"I am the Emperor!" cried Harrison. "Do you hear? I am the Emperor! Everybody must do what I say at once!" He stamped his foot and the studio shook. The author using hyperbole of describing whole studio was shaking to show how Harrison break out the hypocritical of the equality policy and anger of Harrison.
Regard to A&P, ‘It's not as if we're on the Cape; we're north of Boston and there's people in this town haven't seen the ocean for twenty years.” It showing the existence of Queenie and her friends have break out the traditional social norms and the author also using the hyperbole of people in there do not see ocean 20 years to symbolise as there is conservative area and nobody except Queenie have rebel or violate the norms.
However, there are huge differences between two stories. As A&P characters actually do not have courage to fight to the norms or they are yield to the norms in some sense. For example, the protagonist actually nervous and cannot afford the consequences of his act.In the ending of A&P,the author using ‘my stomach kind of fell as I felt how hard the world was going to be to me hereafter.“to describe the nervous and fear of irrational act and the consequences.
But, in the Harrison Bergeron, the protagonist do not afraid the consequences and he just want to rebel the policy for express himself. In story,’And then, in an explosion of joy and grace, into the air they sprang! Not only were the laws of the land abandoned, but …” showing Harrison who compared to A&P protagonists, he is more focus the joyful from rebellion action itself (A&P based on Queenie appearance which force him to against the norms) and he is not afraid of the consequences as if he concern , he will not live on TV,just escape from jail is fine.

"A&P" and "All Summer in a Day" share the theme of prejudice or bias. In "A&P," the protagonist Sammy witnesses the mistreatment of three teenage girls who deviate from societal norms, and he rebels against this by quitting his job. In "All Summer in a Day," a young girl is ostracized by her peers for being different, and her joy at seeing the sun is dashed by their jealousy and cruelty. Both stories demonstrate the harm caused by societal prejudices and biases, and the importance of standing up for what is right. The authors use literary devices such as imagery and foreshadowing to highlight the discomfort and tension caused by these biases.

In the “All summer in a Day”,the man character is a girl who calls Margot. And she is a one person who remember the images of the sun. She told her classmates was the sun like but they don’t trust her. "It’s like a fire," she said, "in the stove." Then they lock Margot forced in the closet "All a joke !" said the boy, and seized her roughly. "Hey, everyone, let’s put her in a closet before the teacher comes !" These kids recognise that they mistake Margot and remember she still unlock in the closet. Finally, she forced waiting more than 7 years for seeing the sunrise. “They unlocked the door, even more slowly, and let Margot out.”
In the “Harrison Bergeron”, the main character is a boy who calls Harrison. He is a handsome and clever, shortly and brave person. However, he survives in a not freedom and extremely controlling century. Maybe this social rules is great for some moral people but suddenly do not confirm for a having potential or talent people like Harrison. Some many rules is limits or control their living behaviour and action. “Instead of a little ear radio for a mental handicap, he wore a tremendous pair of earphones, and spectacles with thick wavy lenses. The spectacles were intended to make him not only half blind, but to give him whanging headaches besides.”, “And to offset his good looks, the H-G men required that he wear at all times a red rubber ball for a nose, keep his eyebrows shaved off, and cover his even white teeth with black caps at snaggle-tooth random.” He want to against this social rules but finally he is sacrificed.
In conclusion, Margot and Harrison are also lost their minds and living behaviour controlled. They also cannot decide their own self. The theme of theses are free will even they also failed.
