I believe Van Gogh wanted to depict how most families used to dine back then. He wanted to show the reality of the lower class people at the time that did not have a lot of money to spend on their meals, but still valued family dinners. It is a rather realistic approach to the daily lives of the people then.

If they are a family, I think that he wants to show what many people go through because of their financial problems and how they have to share that little amount of food with all of them being exhausted to earn it in that little dark room. The thing that surprises me the most is the name of the painting and the time that it was painted.Fourty years ago from the time that the painting was made, there was a famine in Ireland and people were starving to death because the potatoes ,which were Irelands primary source of food, couldnt be grown and the ones that could were most likely poisonous.The title "The potato eaters" for that reason seems a bit ironic to me.

Something that strikes me is the way he painted with those earth colours. He made the painting look so good in a way that makes us think what did he want to show us, what was in his mind when painting this

I think he wanted to say that not everyone is happy all the time and i believe that something traumatic happened to the artist that is why the painting is so dark,gloomy and the faces of the people in it are different.Also i think that is how the artist viewed of the world and life dark,unpleasant,useless.

i believe that he was trying to spread awareness about the hardships some people were/are going through and that not everybody is blessed to live a happy life. apart from that i also believe that he was trying to express his feelings throught the painting, as it is known that he was suffering from depression.

I believe that it wants to stimulate the feeling of poverty (because of the potato) and the old times which it transports us through the painting (because of the weather, the old space, and the clothes that people wear) I believe that this painting wants a lot be careful to draw a conclusion and come to a conclusion in your mind
