Selye identifies stress as having a generic response which he calls General Adaptation Syndrome and this response contains three different stages.
Stage 1: The Alarm Stage
This stage involves the immediate preparation of the body to deal with the stressor. The name for this response is the Fight-or-Flight Response. This is described as being a "call to arms." Our body in this stage is preparing to either fight or flight to combat the stress.
Stage 2: The Resistance Stage
This stage can also be called the adaptation stage. In this stage, the body will attempt to return to a normal state by conserving and restoring what pieces it can.
Stage 3: The Exhaustion Stage
This stage exists if the stressor continues to persist. The bodily resources will begin to deplete and be used up. This therefore causes the body to be overcome with exhaustion and fatigue.

Example and My Process

Example- A high school student has just received a failing grade on their history test. They know they need to study to do better on the next one but they also have swim practice everyday for two hours and chores around the house as well as 6 other honors classes and community service that they have to get done throughout the week!!
My Process- I would immediately hit the alarm stage, freaking out over all of the responsibility and tasks that have to be accomplished in such a small window of time. I would then go into more of a resistance stage by taking deep breaths and beginning to zoom out and assess my situation to determine the best possible method to get everything accomplished. I would typically stop at this stage but in rare cases where school assignments keep piling on top of everything else, I would begin to move to stage 3 where my body and mind are exhausted and I am running low on energy.
