Augustus Edwin John, was a Welsh painter and printmaker.
The first work of his career as an artist was inspired by Rembrandt. Most of his works were portraits, characterized by great vitality and deep psychological analysis.
John portrays many of his famous contemporaries, such as Thomas Hardy, Yeats, George Bernard Shaw, James Joyce, and Isabel II; according to most critics the best of his portraits is what he performed from Welsh poet Dylan Thomas.
