The quote is highly relevant and relate to the theme of hope and resilience because in a nation where women are deemed as lower beings one's source of courage would be through an identity that defies the oppressed, a boy.

This quote is a very good example of hope as well as symbolising hope through a flower. When the old man in the quote states that "No, no, not dead. They may look scraggly and dying now", and in the following sentence he explains "but the roots are good. When the time is right, these roots will support plants that are healthy and strong.", he is inferring that no matter how damaged a flower looks to be, as long as the root is strong enough to support the flower, it will thrive back. The flower is used as a symbolism for hope. IF flower is replaced with hope, it is implied that as long as one has hope no matter the situation, they will always be able to get through life's obstacles.

Malali was a girl who led the charge to defeat the British soldiers in the past. In difficult situations, Parvana calls apon Malali to give her courage and help her face her problems and lead the way.
