This song talks about what happens during this time, and how people lost their jobs in every profession. The banks closed down and people couldn't get their money back. People where living in shacks and poorly made tents.Then president Roosevelt made the new deal for the people to work.

    3. People invested their life savings into the stock market
    • The stock market was in full bull (or rise)
    •  The bull market was a lie (people bought on margin)
    • Over production (too much production not enough demand) occurred and  wages were cut

  • The average income of $2,900 dropped 40% to $1500 from 1929 to 1932
  • There was no form of unemployment insurance or social security when the Great Depression began until 1935 when congress passed the Social Security Act.
  • The Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941 led to declaration of war and put America into full production, opening many jobs and lowering unemployment rates.
  • Top tax rate raised to 79% in 1936
  • The Supreme Court declares the National Labor Relations Board to be unconstitutional in 1936
  • Because buttons were becoming too expensive, zippers became more widely used.
  • The term "skid row" emerged out of the depression era.

    • Farmers were left with no money for groceries and no farm payments, some people lost hope and moved away. 
    •  The Dust Bowl lasted 2 years
    • Automobile and consumer goods declined in sales
    • The Dust  Bowl was the name given to the Great Plains, that weredevastated by the drought in 1930's
    •  When the drought struck in 1934 through 1937, the soil lacked the stronger root system of grass, so the wind picked up the topsoil and swirled it around.
    • It was difficult for unemployed farmers to find work elsewhere in the economy
