Cynthia Abuede

SUMMARY:
In Book 1, Chapter 6 Winston writes in his diary about an encounter he had with an old prole prostitute. He recalls sex being bland as was the sex with his wife. Winston was forced by his wife, Katherine, to have sex with her once a week because according to her it was "their duty to the party" to procreate.

WHAT THIS REVEALS ABOUT THE PARTY:
The party set in motion a notion that sex was not supposed to be pleasurable and that love for another person is downright wrong. Desire was also considered a thoughtcrime even towards your party-approved partner. The party is attempting to dictate emotion and manipulate it in order to remain in power. Love is a strong drive to rebel and contradict things you believe in, so in order to stop the threat they began intervening early on as well like a prevention program.

WHAT WINSTON FEELS:
Winston is sexually frustrated due to his inability to have pleasurable sex. He also has a sadistic attitude and yearns to scream filthy things, but he does not. He attempted to do a sense of therapy by writing everything down, but it does not work. He realized that he was his own worst enemy against his freedom.

Austin Tran

Winston speaks with Syme, a person working on the process of creating the eleventh edition of the Newspeak dictionary. He is a very intelligent man, according to Winston, and they talk about the dictionary. Syme says that they would prefer Oldspeak, but Newspeak has the beauty of destruction of words. Winston thinks that Syme would soon be arrested because he is too smart.

I think this reveals that the Party wants to eliminate all possible ways that people would defy them. This also reveals that they take things too far because if you were to eventually shorten words every time a new volume of a dictionary would release, then there would eventually be no words to be used to "express disloyal thoughts, especially since there would be one word that could express any concept," Syme says.

Winston feels that he doesn't appreciate the idea of Newspeak because most ideas of the removal of words come from Big Brother, and Winston despises Big Brother. He worries that every literature would be forgotten and altered to the point where it would contradict its meaning and yearns for everything to be normal again.

Cynthia Ly

SUMMARY:
Winston believes that only the proles have the power to overthrow the party because they make up 85 percent of the population in Oceania and they are untouched by the party. However, the proles lack the interest and energy to revolt because they lived such ignorant lives. Winston looked at a children's history book to analyze what has happened to the world where the Party had claimed to build ideal cities.

WHAT THIS REVEALS ABOUT THE PARTY:
This reveals that the party is not completely safe from destruction. In addition, it reveals how the party seems to think really highly of themselves as if they had done many great things to the society, such as increasing the literacy rate, reducing infant mortality rate, and giving everyone better food and shelter.

HOW WINSTON FEELS:
Winston feels that the claims that the Party made are not true. However, he is not for sure whether they are lies or not because the history of this society is entirely written by the Party. He is unsure of the past, but he does not believe that the Party has improved the standard living of people because London is a complete wreck.
