If you already have one at home, don't bother getting the newest editions, they're usually 90% the same. If you don't want to spend money on test prep books, there are also a bunch of free practice tests online that you can use (on the College Board and the official ACT website, etc.). 
As for self-studying, it really depends on what type of person you are! If you are generally self-productive and don't procrastinate too much, I'd say you should be fine. It still demonstrates an above-average understanding of the subject, and there is no harm done in including your 4 AP scores. And yes, given current circumstances, admissions offices understand that AP scores may not be the most accurate reflection of your performance in an AP class.
