I wonder if it would help if give this time one name rather than check-in/ advisory/ community. Even at check-in , it is part of Building Foundations by reviewing the schedule of the day and upcoming events.

I wonder if there can be a launch of the new advisory program at the beginning of the year. This can be done in an assembly. It's important to note that the feedback I get from my students is that they don't want to do anything in advisory and I am being the bad guy for "making them work". If the students see that it is an entire middle school initiative, there may not be as much resistance.

I wonder if Cathy can make a form for all students to fill out about advisory in advisory. I think talking to the few students in the General Assembly is not really giving a picture of what the majority of the population feels about our advisory/ community/ check-in program.

The Power of Multilingual Students

At UNIS and in our Middle School, the four parts of the proposed frame could all contain a multilingual component.
Building Foundations:
Students are learning to communicate well in both English as well as French or Spanish then in M3 they add a 3rd Language. MLD and English classes are not the only places where students learn about the power of words and linguistic structures.
Strengthening Relationships and Growing Community
Middle School students are constantly connecting and reconnecting and exploring their identities - these connections include home language(s), heritage language(s), languages they are learning at school and languages they dream of learning. Knowing about each other's languages is linked with varied cultural perspectives and reduction of bias.
Meeting Challenges
One of our key changes at 7th grade is the addition of third language learning that extends for the next 4-6 years. In addition, we have many students who have a course of home language study on their own online, after school, or on weekends. Including some references to these strengths and challenges for students in the advisory setting will only serve to increase the grit and resilience in our diverse population.

How? This kind of inclusive reference to multilingual skills and thinking and learning could greatly strengthen the advisory program with relatively small changes to an existing or developing plan. This could be accomplished with a few systematic tweaks at each level or for each component area, with a few added questions across certain lessons, and with a few added reflection prompts at regular points in each year's strand.

Thanks for the chance to share ideas.
