As the Civil War ended, the Southern States had to reconstruct government and society. The political and social rights of the millions of newly freed Americans would become an important part of post-war period.

Emmett Till - 1955

Emmett Till was a 14 year old black boy who was murdered by two white men for flirting with a cashier at a grocery store. The two men who killed him left him in a river and his body was found and returned to Emmett Till's mother. She decided to have an open casket funeral to show the world how horrible racism is and his death helped prove points for the civil rights movement.

MLK Mountain Top Speech- 1968

This speech was about what Martin Luther King Junior dreamed about. He wanted equality and peace for black people and was hoping to make this change over time.

Freedom Riders- 1961

The people involved in this wanted to show the governement that they won't follow the law, they took busses into segregated places. People in the KKK bombed the freedom riders bus, slashed their tires, and beat them.

Bus boycott- 1956

Black people were sick of not being able to sit where they wanted on the bus so they collected people of all races and decided to stop using the bus. They walked to where they needed to go or carpooled. The bus company was losing so much money becasue barely anyone was taking the bus anymore.

Sit Ins- 1960

Black people would go into whites only places, like a restaurant and just sit there. White people would hit, punch, spit, or pour things on the people sitting down. The goal of this was to show people they aren't doing anything wrong yet they are still being attacked.

Little Rock Nine- 1957

A few black students had the chance to go to an all white school, but they were bullied horribly.

Birmingham Children's Crusade- 1963

Children skipped class and walked out of school to protest. Police officers hit the students, police dogs bit and attacked them, and they were blasted with fire hoses.

March on Washington- 1963

This was a peaceful protest/gathering with everyone who supported Martin Luther King Junior. Everyone was happy and singing and it was a beautiful day out.

Integration of Alabama University- 1963

Governor George Wallace blocked the doorway to the University of Alabama because he didn't want colored people to get in. The ferderal government ended up making him move and he didn't get his way.
