At this stage in time, we weren't supposed to have a clear idea of what we wanted to do project wise, however it was vital we started exploring ideas and make a mind-map, ie. we used Milanote for this. By using this, we had constructed a visual mind-map with the ability to add notes and analyse each image we sourced onto it, to allow for a better creative flow and to generate substantial ideas that make it easier for us to develop our ideas further in week two. In this week I wanted to start exploring colour theory, and also grasp a better concept of how colours flow into each other, specifically how colour harmony applies, in this instance, I was focused on picking out shades from a specific block of colour, and saving the palette so I could incorporate it in the future. This is an artists that loves to explore abstraction within his photography, who prefers to let the thought process come to him as he perceives a surrounding. Inspired by aesthetics and applying them to an image he takes. I was inspired by his specific photography collection of the 'Red Aesthetic' series, where different surroundings are invigorated in an unnatural light, such as red, which conveys many different emotional aspects for anyone who breaks it down. To brush up a little on the meaning conveyed behind colours, specifically red, I researched the multitude of the conflicting meanings within it, such as danger, anger, adventure and even love. I basically wanted to implement my passion for red as colour that acts as a construct, weaving it within my own experimental style. The main focal point, thus the reason for me choosing this, is that it acts as a visible simulation, and is hard to miss; within the design industry, creating an engaging advertisement is key to attracting your target audiences and generating attention. Carson has been such a huge turning point for me over my entire course, researching him helped me to develop my own typographic, experimental style that has constantly developed over the entirety of the course. I've constantly been inspired by unconventional but precise way of working. Everything is all over the place but at the same time its also carefully constructed to provide explosive visuals. I was really inspired by Bass's simplistic style with his palette of 3-4 colors and refined shapes. I wanted to create something personal by using a self-portrait and breaking it down in simple shapes as an experimentation process of the self and perhaps creating some social context within it. I applied a cutout filter over it with a simple hue change and playing with different patterns to fill negative space to fill the emptiness created. I felt as if this really showed off myself in a different context and broke it down to create a different perspective of what it means to be human? Although I think it could be better if I had made it red and black, although I wanted to experiment with different styles to gain inspiration at this stage rather than adapt it further. Bass is a firm believer in audience involvement when it comes to color, noting 'Bright colors don’t always mean ‘loud’, sometimes they mean ‘striking.’ Using simple, vivid color palettes consisting of no more than three or four colors. He also created his signature “kinetic type,” Bass’ which is letters dashed and moved across the screen and frequently incorporated images other than text to make it feel like a visual stop – motion. I'm inspired by the simplicity of his designs and the ability to limit to a minimal color palette to create a clear yet striking design, something I could incorporate across my project.

During my project, I wanted to brush up on color theory, and explore the importance of primary, secondary and tertiary colors, this is the instance in which colors are formed or matched together and work well together visually. In my case, I wanted to explore what went well with red, and its hues, I discovered that black, white, grey, yellow etc. Went well with it since they weren't overbearing against the red, and primary colors often work well together anyway.

However, since I wanted to push myself even further, I even investigated monochromatic, which refers to the use of one color and various shades produced from it, which I could easily do with the help of Adobe Color.

Today we consider the three artists the book mentions as the modern and contemporary standard bearers for red: Donal Judd, Louise Bourgeois, and Anish Kapoor. These al offer unique styles, but work traditionally within red, and the hues and shades surrounding it, some may be more physical rather than digital, however by focusing on the absence of all other colors and only one, they are able to create immersive art that draws an audience's attention. We must also consider the primary color status, and how it’s a prominent color that everyone can associate with, since they are drawn to the emotional aspects it can offer, for instance, anger, lust, desire, passion and so forth. Before I want to start experimenting and creating visuals, I threw my creative process on a mood board to gain inspiration, I researched a lot of album covers working within an aesthetic I wanted to attain, specifically using red. It also gave me the opportunity to play around with different filters and brushes as a sort of paint palette so that I can also grasp an idea of how I want to edit my designs further on in my project as well. To get inspiration for our projects, we visited the London Design Museum, with various sections that we had to take pictures of for anything we could adapt to our personal use for our themes. I walked around and looked for anything that was considered 'abnormal' and inspected each piece while thinking about the thought process behind how I would edit each image. For some pictures, I went for a blurry, distorted effect, as I am not a fan of a realistic, neat style, and wanted to make sure each image creates a motion within it. Overall, the trips helped a lot with getting primary images to develop, and potentially help me understand how to incorporate them within my own experimental style. I researched the rock band, 'Fallout Boy' and 'Imagine Dragons' although i chose to go with Fallout boy; which are also personal to me and focus on a more experimental style within their branding aesthetic, although they still retain a simple band logo like imagine dragons. What I like about them is that their music resonates perfectly with the album covers, using red to emphasize the aggressive emotion that stems from it and applying it to their aesthetic. I had also started to play with designs I created and applied them together to create a visual for my final piece and played around with different styles and experimentation to explore. By now I had settled on creating a large scale rock band album cover for a billboard, although I was going to scale it down in real life.

I had finally created a design that I was proud of, by taking inspiration from their song 'Immortals' I wanted to replicate their text style and the font they use, which was a Times New Roman font, which was a simple yet sophisticated font which stands out nicely across the top, and not being too overwhelming. By making it white, it stands out across the design and allows the audience to read it clearly within a darker color palette that still utilizes the energetic and aggressive emotion the red provides in the middle. I went with a CD layer to place my previous designs in between, making them brighter and adding distortion within it as an experimental effect that draws you in when you look at it, while making the circle borders a vintage yellow and black which contrasts well with the red and draws some focus. Overall, the aesthetic had come out well with everything tied into each other, even the smoke going over the album to generate a realistic and controversial style, adding some social context to it too. I also added a parental advisory box in the bottom left corner as the band's songs contain explicit words and it also adheres to the common conception of rock bands being aggressive and controversial, also it will generate more attention knowing that it contains something deeming it explicit especially for a teenage audience who are considered rebellious. I finally finished it off with a monochromatic grain in a Gaussian blur format which brought together everything quite nicely and helped to blend it in. I had made two versions, one in full color and the other in black and white with a colored album in the middle, to provide different perspectives for my audience, which was still 18-25 teenagers, although it could apply to any older audience as well since the design was striking and provocative to anyone that looked at it. I have chosen to push boundaries, exploring ‘’Red, the study of a conflicting Aesthetic’ to really challenge myself this time. Red is a color of indifferent emotions, it is perceived differently by everyone, and is often associated with desire, anger, or even energy. I aim to use this and take something naturally ‘bland’ like black and white imagery I'll take myself of everyday things or objects, and completely tilt the balance inside of it; in Photoshop. By doing this, knowing that Red is one of the most used colors in graphic design, alongside black and white, it’ll be hard to miss, and it will also spark feeling from everyone. I will be exploring this aesthetic through images over time, and then collecting my progress at the end of the project and outputting a large-scale piece, surrounded by negative space, and a form of red filling the void. To guide me through my experimental process, I will research artists such as David Carson and Saul Bass, whilst also doing secondary research on color theory, as I want to improve my experimentation and learn how to adapt color to the process. and My target audience being 18-30, a broad range, as color is not exclusive to anyone. By the end of this, I hope to have gained a complete understanding of color theory within the modern world.
