Holidays are very important in New Zealand. One of the biggest holidays or event is known as Waitangi Day. The day, which is commemorated on February 6, marks the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi in 1840. The Treaty of Waitangi was considered the founding document of New Zealand. It has been a public holiday since 1984. Many Maori peoples see the day as a reflection, as many think of it as a holiday. On April 25, another holiday known as ANZAC Day is celebrated. ANZAC stands for Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. The day commemorates citizens killed in war and the return of servicemen and women. It is also the date of the Gallipoli landing during World War 1.

New Zealand’s history is very interesting and important. On the 19th of September 1893, Lord Glasgow signs the Electoral Act. the act gave women the right to vote for the first time in history. New Zealand was the first country to ever give women the vote. Most countries didn’t give women the vote until World War 1, which was 1914-1918. Kate Sheppard, who was the most influential suffragette, led the women to this achievement. Another important event in New Zealand occurred on April 12, 1915. It was during World War 1 that thousand of troops stormed Gallipoli Peninsula in what was once called the Ottoman Empire, and is modern day Turkey. They were from Australia, New Zealand, and India. Overall, 130,000 men died along with 2,779 New Zealanders. New Zealand’s history is very important and interesting.

New Zealand has a very effective educational system. Kids start out in Primary Schools. They then make their way to Secondary school. The ages for public schooling funded by the state, range from 5-19. At private schools the age range is 6-16. Usually, children start going to school at the age of 5 years old. They attend for 13 years at public schools. Grades 1-8 are the ages of 5-12. Then grades 9-13, or as we call it, high school, are the ages of 13-17. New Zealand also has a National Curriculum that all public schools must use. Covers all primary and secondary schools. There are standards set for the students to reach for each subject. Primary education covers a very important range of subjects. The most important of those being reading/writing and math. There is a different curriculum for people that have Maori beliefs.

The laws of New Zealand consist of many acts and builds. The Bill of rights puts restrictions on what people in the government, judiciary, police force, and state-owned enterprises can do. The Bill of Rights also protects people. It protects life and security rights, civil rights, discrimination and minority rights, arrest rights, criminal rights, and justice rights. Those are a few of the important ones. Children Rights are covered by a variety of laws. They protect their rights and who decides those rights. There are also many things such as welfare, parental authority, ages of privileges and responsibility, drinking, and when they can move out. Also, as in most countries, any harm done to a child is deemed illegal. Another important category of law are the Health System and Privacy Laws. They are supported by the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights. Protects many things like respect, fair treatment, service of standard, full information, and their right to make a complaint. The Privacy Act, is another important set of laws, it puts a limit on what the government can store personal information. People have the right to understand who stores the information and they can view it at any time. The laws in New Zealand are very fair and open.

In the caves beneath you can go on a tour and see the beautiful and fascinating glowworms that light up the cave. Paparoa National Park was established in 1987. Another very cool National Park is Rakiura National Park. Rakiura has been the most recent edition to New Zealand’s vast range of parks. Today the dance is used at events to show the importance of the occasion. Kapa Haka is a type of performance where people put on a show with all different kind of dances. The name means to get in a line and dance. Performances can be held at schools, special events, and on marae. Marae is a meeting ground. People come to see the many beautiful landscapes New Zealand has to offer. Along with those landscapes, you can go hiking, river rafting, skiing, wildlife watching, and other outdoor exercises. When you get to New Zealand you trade in your money for the New Zealand Dollar. The GDP (gross domestic per capita) has grown very strongly in the last generation. Another very important part of the economy is the business in New Zealand. Competitive business is growing around the world which increases exports to the world. More exports means more continual, high-paying jobs and boosts the standards of living and business. The House is made up of 120 seats and re elected for 3 year terms. 70 are elected individually, through a majoritarian system and 50 are elected as a party, also known as a proportional system. Any type of election is transparent, free, and fair. That means that they are open to the public and fair. Voter turnout for National Elections have decreased regularly since before World War II.

New Zealand was first discovered by a Polynesian explorer by the name of Kupe. The migrations made by the Polynesians began before 900 AD. Dutch geographers than named the islands Nieuw Zeeland from Staten Landt. The Dutch however didn’t colonize the newly found islands. Europeans ended up colonizing New Zealand in 1769. That was when the people known as the Maori started to make an influence on the culture. That was how New Zealand came to be. A young boy, by the name of Ernest Rutherford, was one of the most influential scientists in the world, and he was born in 1871. He grew up to be a physicist and was given the nickname, “The Father of Nuclear Physics.” He was the first person to ever split an atom, which was a very big accomplishment in the day. He also discovered radioactivity and how atoms emitted alpha and beta particles. The main focus of his career was focused on nuclear reactions, and he won a Nobel Peace Prize for it in 1908. His career came to an end when he died in 1937. Yet another famous person who was born in New Zealand was Peter Jackson. He became a very talented writer, producer, and director. He had a passion for movies and show business since he was five. His parents owned a TV set and instantly fell in love. In his teens he would make movies that had his friends as actors.
