They wanted to be economically unimportant. Having multiple colonies was good because it kept them unknown and at less risk of being attacked. It also was good for them because they wanted the colonies just for their religions. A disadvantage could be that these groups are small and have a lack of workers but if they combined groups they'd have more laborers.
