Victoria Nel 23817690

Grade: 3

Subject: Arts and Culture

I will start off the lesson by asking for a volunteer. I will ask the volunteer to dip their one hand in a plate filled with paint. I will then continue to ask the volunteer to walk up to every person in the class and give them a high five with their painted hand. Once all the children have one hand with a bit of paint on it, I will continue to explain that germs work the same way. If one person does not wash their hands and plays with other children, it could cause a ripple effect and make everyone sick. I will also link the topic of sanitization and good hygiene to the current circumstance of the COVID-19 pandemic. After giving them facts and tips about why we need to be hygienic and how we can do it in a sustainable manner (eg we will talk about closing the tap when brushing your teeth and taking showers of only 3 minutes), I will then give them an activity to consolidate their knowledge. The activity will consist of them working in small groups and creating posters to put up around the school on why we need to wash our hands and be hygienic and how we can save water.

I will discuss the facts mentioned in the video and start a class discussion about the topic.
Next i will go on to explain the importance of hand sanitisation and clean water, highlighting on the germs and illnesses that can arise without it.
I will then talk about the global issue that is Clean Water and Sanitation, explaining how millions of people around the world don't have access to such a basic necessity. I will also explain how dirty rivers and lack of sanitisation thus harms the environment.
Lastly, I will conduct a science experiment with the children on how to clean dirty water. Each student will bring in a two litre plastic bottle and fill it with dirty water. We will then leave it outside in the sun and let the UV sterilise the water. I will explain how this is a simple solution to getting safe drinking water and how we need to education people around the world with this concept in order to prevent diseases and dirty rivers.
For homework, they will make posters on the importance of washing ones hands after the toilet that we will then hang up around the school.

Thereafter I will provide the class with a list of items that can be recycled and reused. Once the class has a general idea around the topic and what it involves, I will provide them with their exercise. The class will be divided into groups and have to make an art project out of completely recycled and reused materials. They will be given freedom of expression and can make absolutely any art piece as this teaches them creativity in the arts, while doing this they will also be learning about an important sustainable development issue. Once their art pieces are finished, we will have a discussion about how reducing, reusing, recycling and recovering can affect our environment.

Before introducing the activity, the learners will read through a flow chart about the the continuous increase of diseases ranging from Malaria in African countries to the current pandemic involving COVID-19 right around the world. The chart will also break down the amount of deaths during the last five years but also show how many improvements has been made to cure people. The activity will then require the learners to make a world globe and shade the countries with the highest range of diseases that the SDG has identified and how many of those countries has either improved or gotten worse. The activity will need to be handed in a week later, the reason being, so that learners can do more research on health and well-being of people their age and older. The lesson will then be ended with a pop quiz about the flow chart, at that time I will also take questions from the learners about the lesson.

Eveleen dos Santos
Grade 3
Subject: Geography

This topic is about how to conserve and sustain the use of oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development. I would start off my lesson with a question of if the learners have seen the movie Happy Feet, and ask what they think the message behind it is about the conservation of fishing. I will then discuss what the message actually is and link it to the topic of mine. I will then present a power point with different images of the types of pollution that gets into oceans with meanings and explanations. I will explain how these different pollutions affect our marine life starting from the sea life and moving onto the coral reefs and how that directly affects us and the environment. I will then hand out a worksheet with terminology , a crossword with words that are linked to sustainabilty of the ocean. I will then end my lesson off with the solutions and measures we can take to hopefully reduce the effects.

The video will be censored to some extent because of some of the devastating effects that are linked to climate change.
I will then start a class discussion about what each child thinks the largest contributor is to climate change, as well as why they think so.
A short coloring activity will follow, each child will receive a coloring book picture of a contributor of climate change, whether that be a factory that is causing air pollution or a person littering in the ocean of in nature. The children will be given a few minutes to start coloring but if they do not finish it will be converted into homework to be completed for the next day's lesson.
Following the activity a PowerPoint presentation will be presented to the class, the presentation will touch on multiple topics including; the causes, the effects and what can be done to combat climate change. In conclusion the learners will be asked about what they as individuals can do to combat climate change and the effect thereof.

SDG we have chosen as a group: Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.

Grade: 3
Subject: Science
Topic: Be Aware and Wash with Care. Teaching correct hygiene and sanitisation of hands during the COVID-19 pandemic whilst saving the environment.

Sustainable Development Goals were adopted by the United Nations as a call to end poverty, protect the planet and allow people across the globe to enjoy life. Every SDG goal is linked to another, and action in one area with have a ripple effect on another. These global goals sit at the core of Environmental Education as EE aims to teach students that the planet is under threat of environmental crisises (thus introducing the problem) and the SDGs pinpoint the areas of where improvement can be made in order to create sustainablility (introduces a solution). The two go hand-in hand.

In order to introduce the topic of sanitisation and the need to clean water, the teacher will ask the class for a volunteer. The volunteer will go to the front of the class and place one of their hands in a plate filled with paint. The volunteer will then go around to each person and give them a high-five. At the end, all the children will have paint on their hands. The teacher will then continue to explain that germs, like the Coronavirus, spread from person to person not only through the air but by contact with people who do not wash their hands and by touching dirty surfaces. The teacher will explain that a way to stop this is to wash our hands with soap regularly or to sanitize them.

The teacher will then show the class a short youtube video from the UN based on Clean Water and Sanitation. After, the teacher will discuss the facts mentioned in the video and start a class discussion about the topic. Once again, the teacher will emphasise, the importance of hand sanitisation and clean water, highlighting on the germs and illnesses that can arise without it. Next, the teacher will link this discussion to the global issue that is Clean Water and Sanitation, explaining how millions of people around the world don't have access to such a basic necessity and how dirty, polluted rivers and lack of sanitisation can thus harms the environment and the people and animals living in such environment.

In order to visually explain how sanitising prevents the spread of germs and disease, the teacher will get a small bowl of water and pour pepper on top. Asking for a volunteer to dip their finger into the bowl of pepper, she will show how nothing happened to the pepper when the finger was placed in the bowl. Then she will make someone wash their hands with soap and ask them to stick their finger in the bowl with pepper. The pepper will suddenly disappear leaving the finger clean. The pepper represents the dirt and germs. This will show the children the importance of washing their hands.
