My purpose for this course was to gain the research skills I will need in my future classes. I wanted to challenge my previous writing skills and incorporate new methods. This class caught my attention because of the concentration on social injustices and careers. Enrolling in school, I was not sure what career I was interested in pursuing. Thanks to WP1, I was able to confidently decide on whether the career path I had in mind was right for me. Throughout this course, I was able to confidently address my authorship in my writing by using Ethos, Pathos and Logos. I was able to better my writing process by first creating a good foundation for my ideas and then organizing my ideas to help shape my paper. For most of the writing projects we had, we needed to turn in an outline to help with our paper's structure, which ultimately aided my writing process. For my critical thinking and reading, I learned how to sort through the bad sources from the credible ones as well as how to do an annotated bibliography. For my information literacy skills, I am now able to properly cite sources and how to paraphrase articles correctly. I have developed my rhetorical knowledge skills by acknowledging the purpose of my writing, addressing the audience and applying my authorship.

The different multimodal approaches we used in class impacted my work in writing project 2 and 3 as they allowed me too not only navigate through a new platform but assisted in my creativity. A platform I fell in love with is Padlet. Padlet allows posts to be uploaded anonymously which creates a safe place to post without any restrictions or judgement. Receiving positive feedback in my Padlet’s or even during our google docs annotations would provide me the confidence to state my argument in WP2 and 3.

Conducting the research, I needed for WP2 and 3 was very difficult at times to read through due to my culture and identity. As part of a minority group in the United States, I relate to many examples and statistics provided in my research and learned how deep structural racism affects minorities. My positionality plays a role in my writing and publication process as I choose a topic that I am passionate about and was able to express my thoughts onto paper all while remaining on topic.

During WP1 I received helpful feedback during peer reviews. This included suggestions to group certain ideas together or organize them in a way it is easier to read. An example was to write about career opportunities right after going over the career's salary, which was very beneficial to the overall structure of my paper. I was able to take that feedback and input the ideas into my final draft.

The most useful thing I learned about giving feedback was to learn to appreciate different writing styles and provide the possible feedback needed to help the audience.

After taking this class, I discovered how ineffective my research strategies were. This class was the first time I learned about the CRAAP test and how to differentiate between a credible and non-credible source of information. This was also the first year I learned how to take advantage of our school's resources, like the library. The library's database is a mass source of credible information and easier to pick through in comparison to Google.

Formulating and articulating my own position was my biggest challenge this semester for WP3. I had all the research I needed however, because my topic involved racism it was very hard to choose a problem/solution writing strategy when racism cannot be easily solved with simple solutions. Evaluating my research and conducting more research to discover measures that can be put into place to minimize racism, helped my mold my argument.

When researching evidence and statistics to support my ideas I exercised the CRAAP test to single out credible sources and only used sources that are no older than 5 years.

I did not find myself encountering any challenges while evaluating or integrating my sources, however I did struggle a bit with crediting some sources. I had trouble figuring out how to properly cite information an author provided from another author. I was not sure who to credit for the quote. Fortunately, I was not the only student who was struggling with the same problems and overcame this challenge once the professor went over crediting sources in depth.

The most important thing I learned in this course are the different argumentative and rhetorical strategies. These skills are helpful in understanding and evaluating any information I process, whether it is a commercial ad or a piece of writing I am reading.

My argument in WP#3 involved structural racism, if I had a different positionality I would have probably been on the opposing side of my argument. If I had a different positionality, my target audience would have shifted from spreading awareness of the internalized racism in our health care system to setting the record straight that the reason for disparities is simply because minorities are not being responsible in maintaining their health.
