The Tuatara is an ancient species of creature that looks like a lizard, but is more related to birds and crocodiles. This creature also is responsible for many legends in the mythology of the native people of New Zealand connecting them to, or believing them to be, messengers of the God Whiro, who in Maori legend is the god of Death and Disaster, and are forbidden from being harmed by anyone. They are also known as indicators of Tapu, which are borders between sacred and magical areas and the natural world.

It's almost definite and correct that the fossils of Prehistoric animals are the cause for some of the myths we know of today. There's just way too many examples and too much evidence of this sort of thing for it to not be true. But this raises the questions, Where did it truly start? Which myth was the first and what species of creature was it that sparked said myth to be made?
